Skylar Astin mashed up of Ed Sheeran and Shakira songs
September 2nd, 2020 under Ed Sheeran, Shakira, Skylar Astin, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. [ Comments: none ]

Skylar Astin is used to doing mashups because of his starring roles in Pitch Perfect and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Therefore, it would make sense he would make some of his own when he is not in front of the camera.

The actor decided to combine Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie with Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, and it got my hips moving. As we know, hips don’t lie. What do your hips think of the tune he shaped?

The day the music didn’t die for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist
June 12th, 2020 under Alex Newell, NBC, Peter Gallagher, Ted Danson Mary Steenburgen, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. [ Comments: none ]

It has been a month since NBC was supposed to announce their lineup for the 2020-2021 season, but they haven’t announced it yet because everything is up in the air because of the coronavirus pandemic. Several of their shows were left waiting to find out if they would still have a home on the network.

Good Girls was told they things are still good with the bad girls. The fat lady sang for Perfect Harmony. The Bone Collector killed Lincoln Rhyme. Manifest is still not sure if it crashed and burned or if it will land safely on their schedule. Indebted is waiting to find out if they indebted to NBC.

Finally, there is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Did the music die for last season’s best new show? NOPE! They will be around to sing for another day, which is a good thing for the peacock network. If they had silenced their actors’ voices, then we would have gone nuts. As in found something to send them like when we sent CBS peanuts to save Jericho. We could have sent them cereal because of the cereal bar that is at her office. But we don’t have to do that because the series is coming back!

If you missed out on the musical dramedy when it aired, I highly suggest you watch it now on NBC’s app, OnDemand or Hulu. ZEP is about workaholic programmer Zoey (Jane Levy) whose life changes while she is stuck in an MRI machine during an earthquake. When Zoey gets out of it, she now has the ability to hear people’s heart songs. As in, she is the only one who can see them sing and dance. Something that seems like a curse to her, and a dream come true for us viewers.

ZEP also stars Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Peter Gallagher(?), Mary Steenburgen, and Lauren Graham.

Now I am off to watch to some more of the amazing song and dance numbers from the first season like the above one that was shot in one take. You read that right, the finale, not the swan song, was done in one take. Now you know you want to see more, don’t you?

I just want to know if we should be reading too much into her five last words of the season, “They day the music died.”

There’s a Bad Moon Rising on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’s season finale
May 3rd, 2020 under Alex Newell, Peter Gallagher, Ted Danson Mary Steenburgen, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. [ Comments: none ]

Get your tissues ready for tonight’s season finale of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on NBC tonight at 9p.

The episode starts off with Zoey (Jane Levy) singing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Bad Moon Rising, and now she wants to know what it means? Does it have anything to do with her BFF Max (Skylar Astin) getting fired from his job? Is Joan (Lauren Graham) getting fired over the failed bake-off for Chirp? Did something happen to Simon (John Clarence Stewart), who went to his estranged mother’s wedding in Las Vegas? What about Mo (Alex Newell), who is not taking their breakup very well? Is there something wrong with her brother David (Andrew Leeds) and Emily’s (Alice Lee) baby? And then there is her dad (Peter Gallagher) who is in the final stages of his life?

Just when you think you know what is going to happen, they find a way to surprise. The one thing that won’t surprise you is how well they tug are your heartstrings. Thus, why you need the tissues.

Tonight’s episode a nice tribute to a great season of television. We need more shows like it on the air. Enough procedurals, why can’t a drama be a feel-good one.

One spoiler note, the season ends with a finale number that includes the whole cast.

Who gets fired on tonight’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist?
April 26th, 2020 under Alex Newell, NBC, Peter Gallagher, Ted Danson Mary Steenburgen, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. [ Comments: none ]

Tonight’s Zoey Extraordinary Playlist brings the tears on tonight’s episode, but the music makes everything seem better.

As Jane’s (Jane Levy) father (Peter Gallagher) gets closer to losing his brave fight with his illness, his family goes funeral shopping. Jane, her mom (Mary Steenburgen) and her brother (Andrew Leeds) go to a cemetery to take a look at their options. They meet (Paul Feig, Executive Producer) and he gives them the hard sell. It is really hard on Maggie (Steenburgen) and she just gotta get out of that if it’s the last thing she ever does.

Maggie tells Zoey it is just too hard, and she doesn’t know what to do because she doesn’t know anyone who has been through it. Zoey goes back to the funeral home and meets a widow (Bernadette Peters), who doesn’t seem that sad. Zoey asks her if she will help her mom through this process. After watching Steenburgen and Peters share the screen together, I want them to share the stage in a musical.

Zoey is able to help her mom, but she needs help with the bake-off over Chirp. Now that Max (Skylar Astin) and Leif (Michael Thomas Grant) are working on the 6th floor, Zoey’s team is down 2 people. Do they even have a chance of winning?

Leif is still broken-hearted over losing his love, Joan (Lauren Graham), his boss, and sings her a sad song. He is not the only one because Max is telling Zoey, bye, bye, bye.

There is one more person whose heart gets broken tonight, Mo (Alex) breaks up with Mo’s boyfriend.

All of this leads to someone getting fired from SPRQPoint. Guess who?

I don’t know what makes me sadder, the sad songs, or that next week is the season finale. I am going with the latter. I don’t want this show to end because it is my new favorite show on television. I just love it so much!

Here I Go Again, I love Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist
April 19th, 2020 under NBC, Peter Gallagher, Ted Danson Mary Steenburgen, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. [ Comments: none ]

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is back on NBC tonight at 9p after a week off. We find out what happens next for Zoey since her crush Simon broke up with his fiancee.

Zoey (Jane Levy) is happy that Simon (John Clarence Stewart) is single, and now she has a pretty good chance of getting it on with him. Is he ready to get it on with her?

One guy, she is not getting it on with, is her best friend Max (Skylar Astin), who has a crush on her. He is leaving her and the fourth floor for a new job on the sixth floor, their competition.

Gone with him is the coding he did when he was on the fourth floor for their project, Chirp. Now the sixth floor is going to steal and keep it for themselves. That is unless Joan (Lauren Graham) can get it back. Will she get it back or will she lose more than that to the sixth floor.

Zoey is about to lose something very close to her, her dad. Mitch (Peter Gallagher) is quickly deteriorating, and he does not much time left. Before he dies, Zoey wants to give her parents one more anniversary at their favorite restaurant. When her plan falls through, she will do everything in her power to give her mom (Mary Steenburgen) and her dad a Perfect night.

The last plotline hits very near to my heart. My dad went through some of the things that Mitch did before he died. So when Steenburgen and Gallagher sing Ed Sheeran’s Perfect, I was a blubbering mess. It is a beautiful scene that will truly touch everyone’s heart. Plus, the duet between the two actors is just phenomenal. It should be our relationship goals.

Just like it should be our goal to watch Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist every Sunday.

One last thing about tonight’s episode, there is a Zoey first. She hears someone sing the same song again. Which song is it, and why?
