BTWF: Willem Day-foe in acting school
November 11th, 2019 under Before They Were Famous, Conan O'Brien, We've Been Mispronouncing Their Name. [ Comments: none ]

Before we knew him as Willem Dah-foe, he told people his last name was pronounced Day-foe. Why did the 20 year old pronounce his name a different way in 1975? He told Conan O’Brien that half of his family pronounced it one way and the other half like we do. He preferred the Day-foe until people assumed his first name was Dave. After the happened to him a few times, he realized Dah-foe sounded better especially as an actor.

Even Jake Gyllenhaal can’t say his own last name
June 28th, 2019 under Jake Gyllenhaal, We've Been Mispronouncing Their Name. [ Comments: none ]

Saying Gyllenhaal is almost as hard to pronounce it as it is to spell. However, you would think that Jake Gyllenhaal would be able to say it without a problem. Yesterday, when he was talking about Spider-Man Far From Home with Extra, she said he was the best Gyllenhaal. He asked her to “say it a little lower because there are a couple of other Gyllenhaals” there. Although, he could not quite get the plural version of it out as easily.

If he can’t say his own name, how are we expected to?

When it comes to his archnemesis, at least it is easy to say and spell Ryan Reynolds! When are we going to get a Deadpool, Wolverine and Mysterio movie? That would show those other Marvel movies who is boss.

It’s Re-ann-ah not Re-on-na
May 31st, 2019 under Rihanna, We've Been Mispronouncing Their Name. [ Comments: none ]

For years we have been pronouncing Rihanna’s name Re-on-na. However, while introducing her Fendi line in Paris to British Vogue, the Barbadian singer pronounced it as Re-ann-ah. I don’t know about you, but this American has been saying her name wrong all along. Thankfully, I finally learned how to spell it.

How do you say her name?

We’ve been saying Chrissy Teigen’s name wrong
September 17th, 2018 under Chrissy Teigen, We've Been Mispronouncing Their Name. [ Comments: 1 ]

I don’t know about you, but I have been pronouncing Chrissy Teigen’s name Tea-gen. Turns out I was wrong. Yesterday, she revealed that it actually pronounced Tie-gen like tiger. Her mother even backed her up, and I believe her mother.

I am blown away. It would be like finding out that it is Ariana Grand-ee, Judd Apa-tow like towel, Jeff Zucker like hooker or George Takei like gay. Who is next?

When it comes to Tie-gen, how does she feel about it? She said, “I don’t correct people, ever. They can call me Janet and I won’t. Wrong order? I’ll eat it. Taxi going to the wrong airport? I’ll change my flight.” In fact, she says she even correct people if they say Tie-gen.

Do you pronounce Lititz as Latits?
December 14th, 2017 under Bloopers, TV News, We've Been Mispronouncing Their Name. [ Comments: none ]

WGN’s Robin Baumgarten has made her fair share of on-air bloopers and here’s her latest one. When talking about delightfully named towns in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, she thought that Lititz was pronounced like a strip club in the seedy part of town. Sadly, her co-anchor eventually corrected her and told her it is actually pronounced Lit-itz not La-tits. But personally, I will go with Baumgarten’s pronunciation because I will never grow up and that is a funnier way of saying the town’s name.
