IT turns out that SIMON COWELL hasn’t always been the Mr Nasty of pop. In a recent interview the X Factor creator told how he has always regretted not speaking out and putting an end to EDDIE MURPHY’S pop dreams. Simon was hired to help the love rat hit the high notes in the early 1980s and, in hindsight, wishes he had the nerve back then to tell the Beverly Hills Cop star he was terrible. The American Idol judge, who is famous for letting wannabes know exactly what he thinks on reality TV talent shows, was not quite as honest with Eddie. Simon says: "He was interested in making a record, so I flew to the east coast (of America), to his huge house, and I was very intimidated. "I thought it would be just the two of us and a hi-fi. But I ended up in a recording studio with about 20 nodders – a nodder is someone who gets paid to agree with the person paying him. "Eddie started to play some songs, which I hated, and I just didn’t know what to say. "Now I’d find it a lot easier. I would just say ‘I hate it’."

"I never thought I’d play to a room full of critics — without dynamiting the place." That was Sting’s reaction to performing his new classical album Songs From From The Labyrinth for TV critics at press tour Saturday night. The dapper pop star has gone all 16th century, performing songs written by Elizabethan lute master John Dowland. PBS shot Sting performing the melancholy music at his Italian villa for a Great Performances special airing Feb. 26. Sting — who looks more and more like Mats Sundin — sat on a stage surrounded by candles and played various lutes. He was joined by musician Din Karamazov, who joked that he was "the second-most well-known lutanist in the world." During the hour-long set, Karamazov broke a string on one of his hand-crafted lutes. Cracked Sting, "every time you break a string a sheep dies." For an encore, Sting — whose voice sounds as pure as ever — treated critics to his Police hit Message In A Bottle on the lute. After the performance, he was asked about rumours of a Police reunion. "You know, it’s the 30th anniversary," said Sting. "It would be nice to do something to celebrate. We don’t quite know what, but we’re talking about it." Sting insists he’s "good friends" with ex-band mates Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. "I’m deeply, deeply fond of both of them," he said. "I’m very proud of the band that we were in." When it was suggested that the two bands fans most want to see reunited are The Police and Van Halen, Sting playfully joked, "I’ll join Van Halen."

Maybe I am still bummed because both times I saw him in concert I was bored out of my mind, but I just think that PBS is the right channel for him because it is not the most exciting channel.

Rick Schroder has ditched his adult name for the one that made him famous as a child star. For his upcoming stint on hit drama 24, the actor will be credited as Ricky Shroder – the name he grew out of in his late teens. He says, "My agents said, ‘You know, you should change your name to Rick. It’ll help grow up from a kid to an adult.’ I’ve learned in the last 20 years it takes more than dropping a letter from your name to help you grow up. And so I’m more comfortable being called Ricky. My wife, my mom, everybody calls me Ricky… Rick never felt right. I felt like I was trying to be something I wasn’t."

Bollywood movie stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are engaged and will marry later this year, the former Miss World’s manager confirmed Monday, ending months of speculation about their relationship. Rai and Bachchan exchanged engagement rings in a small ceremony before a small group of relatives and friends late Sunday, Hari Singh told The Associated Press. "Yes, it is true. Abhishek and Aishwarya are engaged," Singh said. "The wedding will definitely take place this year." There has been speculation for several months about the love lives of the two actors, and news of their engagement was the top story in several Indian newspapers. The Times of India newspaper reported the wedding would take place in February or March. "The children [Abhishek and Aishwarya] have decided [to marry]," Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood legend and Abhishek’s father, told The Times of India. "We are very happy." Abhishek Bachchan, 31, and Rai, 33, have worked together in several movies. In "Guru," Bachchan plays a man from a small Indian village who works his way to becoming a top industrialist and Rai plays his supportive wife. The two also starred in a period drama "Umrao Jaan," "Kuch Na Kaho" or "Say No More" and "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke" or "Two and a Half Words of Love."

Thursday-night comedy Scrubs will be back for a seventh season on either NBC or ABC, according to creator Bill Lawrence. With the Touchstone Television-produced show now in syndication, Lawrence says, should NBC pass on bringing the show back, it will find a home at Touchstone’s corporate cousin, ABC. "Since every produced episode makes a ton of money for Touchstone," Lawrence says, "they told us not to write a finale for this year." The show has a strong chance of returning to NBC next year, he adds. "We’ve essentially been told that NBC is really happy with how we are doing. I would say it’s better than a coin flip we are back on NBC." Airing at 9 p.m. between The Office and rookie 30 Rock, Scrubs is averaging a solid 3.5 rating/9 share in the adult 18-49 demo as part of a Thursday-night comedy block that is cherished by NBC President Kevin Reilly. At a median age of 36.1, it is the network’s youngest-skewing primetime series. "NBC isn’t the same juggernaut anymore," Lawrence says, "but it still feels cool to be on Thursdays." But he understands that there is less financial motivation for NBC to keep the Touchstone-produced show on the network. "The show is a dinosaur, on one network and completely owned by another," he acknowledges. And Touchstone continues to show faith in the show. The studio greenlighted a Jan. 18 musical episode at double the cost of a typical installment. Lawrence also says that the show would not continue without star Zach Braff, but he "feels pretty good" that Braff is on board for a seventh and final season.
