Seriously? WTF? Burger King the movie
July 10th, 2006 under Fast Food, Movies. [ Comments: none ]

Now that they’ve conquered nearly every other media fiefdom, Burger King and Crispin Porter & Bogusky plan to invade Hollywood.
Crispin creatives have written a BK-oriented movie, plan to start shooting this fall and are shopping it to 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures, Advertising Age has learned. The Miami-based agency is looking for a financial and distribution partner, according to executives familiar with recent meetings, and while specifics haven’t been ironed out,  As for the upcoming movie, Crispin executives have said they want to create a modestly budgeted (under $10 million) character-driven story that takes place in an apartment above a Burger King restaurant. So far, there’s no director, nor a completed script, which is being overseen personally by agency honcho Alex Bogusky and is expected by fall. No casting has taken place, though it’s anticipated that the movie would feature emerging talent rather than big-name stars. Aside from the setting, the ubiquitous and controversial Burger King mascot would have no real role in the movie, said executives who have attended the meetings. Universal executives declined to comment, and Fox executives did not return calls. A Crispin spokeswoman and Burger King declined to comment. Crispin executives have used several film reference points to describe the movie they want to make. Among them are "Garden State," "Napoleon Dynamite," "Raising Victor Vargas" and "What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?" They intentionally did not go the sophomoric goofball comedy route, a la "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" or "American Pie."
Franchisees contacted about the film weren’t aware of the plan but liked the idea. While in Chicago this week, Al Cabrera, chairman of Heartland Food Corp, owner-operator of 249 Burger King restaurants, said his children gleefully pointed to a White Castle after recognizing it from the "Harold and Kumar" movie. "I think it’s a great idea," he said.

Word to the wise, do not use scary Burger King dude unless you are planning on a doing a horror movie.

Dirty Ugly Things
July 10th, 2006 under Music. [ Comments: none ]

DIRTY Pretty Things took it out on MTV presenter Zane Lowe when he tried to stop them smoking backstage at the Oxegen festival.
We’re told: "The band were on a bender and lit up in a no-smoking area. When Zane asked them to stop, guitarist Dids punched him and the others joined in." An MTV spokesman said: "Luckily Zane was OK and didn’t make a fuss about it."

SYTYCD spoilers
July 10th, 2006 under SYTYCD. [ Comments: none ]

Nigel, Mary, and Brian were judges this week. As soon as Brian came out I could smell his cologne like whoa. He must have taken a bath in the stuff. Also of interest – Nigel said that next week we’re going to start seeing individuals dance! Interesting. Cat is slightly less irritating in person, which meant that I refrained from punching her in the face. The choreographers were Dan, Tyce, and some French guy. Now on to the couples.

Natalie/Musa – Hip Hop. They were good, although it was clearly more of a chance for Musa to finally show off. It was sort of a music video style, I guess. Natalie does more acting than dancing. Nigel liked it a lot, but Mary wasn’t really feeling it.

Heidi/Ryan – Cha Cha. First off, the song was "Sex Bomb" by Tom Jones and that is just awesome by itself. This dance was awesome – very high energy and really sexy. Of course Heidi nailed it, and I thought Ryan did quite well. The judges agreed with me. Although Nigel called Heidi a "Cabbage Patch Doll" because of the way she scrunches her face up sometimes (though, after the cameras were off he said he didn’t mean it in a bad way…) and they all sort of said that Ryan’s performance was "missing something" – he was too tense, perhaps.

Ivan/Allison – Contemporary. WOW. I was reeeeeally skeptical of Ivan pulling this off, but holy crap. I have never been an Ivan fan, but this dance was absolutely fantastic. The chemistry between them was great, and the dance itself was beautiful. The Ivanison (Allivan?) shippers will go CRAZY for this one. Allison is even more gorgeous in person, and of course she nailed this style. And her dress was pretty. I was really, really surprised by Ivan. And Mary CRIED, y’all! During the performance, you could hear multiple gasps throughout the audience, and after it ended I heard Brian say, "Wow" behind me. Wow indeed. I believe the song was by Annie Lennox.

Dmitry/Ashlee – Pop. Seriously, even Nigel was like, "WHAT IS POP?" Brian was pissy that everyone was calling it "watered down hip hop." And apparently every pop routine has to have a guy with eyeliner and a girl with crazy hair? Anyway, I wasn’t too impressed, and neither were the judges.

Travis/Martha – Foxtrot. This was really nice! Of course it’s not the most exciting style, but they were very elegant and Mary said that Fred and Ginger would be proud. They had a couple little stumbles/little things that didn’t flow as well, but other than that a good performance. In the video, Travis was upset that they got ballroom again and said, "Am I allowed to cry on camera? Or is that a Benji thing?" HA!

Benjelle – Broadway. Holy crap, you guys. This will pretty much be the most adorable and fun thing you have ever seen. Like, I was smiling and giggling through the whole thing. Donyelle points out in the video that this week they get to show more of their "friendship" rather than the "romance" that has been prevalent in past week. They danced to a song from Hairspray and they were just all over the stage and over the top and fabulous. Benji was wearing slacks with a royal blue dress shirt and bright yellow tie, and Donyelle wore a bright yellow ruffly dress. Adorable. The judges gave a standing ovation. I did too.

OMG! I can not wait to see Benjelle do Broadway!

Spider-Man 3 updates
July 10th, 2006 under Movies. [ Comments: none ]

Wait ’til next year. The battle for box office honors — between "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" will stretch into 2007.
That’s when "Spider-Man 3" comes to bat to challenge the three-day record — $135 million — set by "Pirates 2" ("Dead Man’s Chest"). It beat out "Spider-Man’s" previous record by $20 million.
The third "Spidey" is shooting in New York and someone who should know tells me, "You ain’t seen nothin’ yet."
The company was filming — from 3 ayem — in front of the New York Public Library for several days. In the scenes were Tobey Maguire and "Spidey’s" "Uncle Ben" as played by Oscar-winner Cliff Robertson.
Sure, his "Uncle Ben" character had died in the first film. But Robertson reminds me he came back in the second film. He  was sworn to secrecy as to how he returns in the third. But he tells me director Sam Raimi "is a genius."
They worked in the very early hours to try and avoid N.Y. traffic — but word did get out and fans appeared along with the three ayem shooting call.
"Spider-Man 3" is Robertson’s 78th film. He won his Oscar for "Charlie" in 1969 and says he has no intention of retiring. He’s 80.

Hats off to Cliff Robertson! I hope to be that active at 80!
