The Oscars finally found a host
December 4th, 2018 under Kevin Hart, Oscars. [ Comments: none ]

Remember in History of the World Part 1 when Madeline Kahn said no to all of those soldiers until she said yes? Well, it was the same thing with this year’s Oscars. Except the people that they were asking to host Hollywood’s big night were all saying no.

That was until today when Kevin Hart said yes to AMPAS and to us he had something else to say. He wrote, “For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose to. I am so happy to say that the day has finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time…. To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable. I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now. I want to thank my family/friends/fans for supporting me & riding with me all this time…. will be sure to make this year’s Oscars a special one. I appreciate the @TheAcademy for the opportunity now it’s time to rise to the occasion #Oscars.”

I think they made it a good call. It just would have been a better one if they could have gotten The Rock to do with it him. Since I have been saying for the last three years that they should be the ones to doing it together.

Plus, the Academy got lucky getting him because they need a big name to MC the night. That is because the movies people want to get nominated (Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians) will not and the ones they never heard of will. There has been absolutely no Oscar buzz and it is already December 4th.

EGOT got three new members!
September 10th, 2018 under Emmys, John Legend, Oscars. [ Comments: none ]

Yesterday, EGOT’s membership jumped 25% with the addition of three new members. Lyricist Tim Rice, mega Broadway producer Andrew Lloyd Webber and John Legend got the final key to the door when they won the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) Emmy for producing Jesus Christ Superstar.

What is an EGOT? It is when a person wins the Emmy, the Grammy, the Oscar and the Tony award. Before last night only 12 people held that honor since 1962. Legend is the youngest person to join, did it in the second least amount of time (Robert Lopez did it in 10 years while Legend did it 12) and the first African-American man (Whoopi Goldberg was the first African-American member) to get it.

If you are like me, then you are wondering what Webber and Legend did to get the fourth honor. Webber has an Oscar for You Must Love Me from Evita and Legend won the Tony for producing the revival of Jitney.

What about Tim Rice? He said, “Thanks to all for messages re EGOT thingy. Also delighted for @OfficialALW and brilliant @johnlegend . Had to break news to John that we did not have him in mind when we wrote it in 1969-70. Also thanks to all the NBC JCS team esp. @neilmeron and late @craigzadan.”

Who do you think will be the next member of the exclusive group? My money is on Liza Minelli or Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The popular movie category was not popular with the Oscars
September 6th, 2018 under Oscars. [ Comments: none ]

Last month, the Oscars announced that they were making some changes to the awards show. The most controversial one was the adding of the Best Popular Film. They faced a lot of backlash from people inside and outside of Hollywood.

There is so much disdain for the new category that today they announced it will not be part of this upcoming Oscars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, AMPAS “will examine and seek additional input regarding the new category.”

Personally, I was looking forward to it because then movies like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians would get a nomination. The voting elitists keep nominating films that no has seen or want to see. Therefore, there is no reason for the average moviegoer to watch the show. I wish they were not such film snobs because I want them to recognize films that will have a lasting effect on Hollywood and not ones that will be forgotten the day after the show. Can you name what film won this year?

How do you feel about Best Popular Film?

Some big changes are coming to the Oscars
August 8th, 2018 under Oscars. [ Comments: none ]

Let’s be honest, the Oscars are a real snore. People you don’t care about are nominated for films you have not seen. It is a long boring show that puts you to sleep. Within a few days, you don’t even remember who won Best Picture. Can you tell me who because I honestly don’t remember?

Well, they are adding a new category that will honor popular films. Translation, movies that we have seen and heard of. I am OK with this, but those films should be nominated for their merit because, let’s be real, Wonder Woman was better than The Post.

They are also cutting down on the number of categories that will be shown live on the air. They will still be presented on that night, but instead, they will be taped during commercial breaks. Then an edited version will air later during the show.

While I think that is a good idea. I think they need to cut down on the unfunny jokes between the presenters and long drawn out montages that add nothing to the show.

Another change won’t come until 2020, and they are moving the show up to the second Sunday of February. Which means awards season won’t be drawn out.

Will this be enough to get the awards show ratings again? We will find out on February 25th, the day after the 2019 Oscars.

Does this make you want to watch the Academy Awards again or have you been done with them for a while now? I am so over them.

The Lonely Island sings why aren’t blockbusters nominated for Oscars
March 5th, 2018 under Oscars. [ Comments: 1 ]

Back in 2014, The Lonely Island was nominated for an Oscar for their song Everything Is Awesome from The Lego Movie. Well everything is not awesome with the Oscars because this year’s was the least watched. We can blame the politics, the host and so on. But, I think, the real reason is because there are no movies to root for.

They keep nominating movies that no one has seen nor they want to see. I bet you if Wonder Woman was nominated, at least 3 more million people would have watched. So why not nominate films that people have seen?

The Lonely Island pondered that thought, and wrote a song called Why Not Me? It features Thor, Wonder Woman, Tiffany Haddish, The Chrises, Pennywise and Aquaman asking that very question. The question we have all been asking for years. Well everyone who is not a member of the Academy.

Seriously, when I was kid they nominated movies I saw. Which is why I still watch the Academy Awards. When I told my friends’ 9-year-old that Wonder Woman wasn’t nominated, she just could not understand it. Even though her dad and I would watch the Oscars together in college, his daughter will not have that same experience. We were raised on them and she was not. There is nothing for her to get behind since Frozen and she was too young when it was nominated.

Do you think the Academy should nominate one blockbuster a year to get viewers or keep it as it is. I mean imagine the numbers if Black Panther got some noms?
