Tonight at 8p, Roseanne-less aka The Conners debuts on ABC. This morning John Goodman and Sara Gilbert talked about their show on Good Morning America. They did not say much about the changes because they cannot.
Then when Michael Strahan asked them what they would say to the skeptics to get them to watch, Goodman had the perfect answer. He said, “Don’t cost nothing!” There you have it, your reason to watch.
But will you? I think their numbers will be huge tonight because of the curiosity factor. Then I expect the numbers to rapidly decline.
John Goodman was on Jimmy Kimmel Live yesterday and he talked about what it is like working on The Conners without Roseanne. He told the ABC late night host, “It was very weird doing the first show without her.” Then he said that the two of them would laugh together, but there was “always the danger of her peeing herself.”
He also revealed that after Roseanne got cancelled, he just crashed for a couple of weeks, his wife got sick and he fell down the stairs. Bad things come in threes, but then Sara Gilbert and producer Mark Werner were able to get them to do The Conners.
In order for that to happen, Roseanne had to give up a lot. Goodman said he cannot thank her enough for giving all of that up so that they can continue doing the show that is not the same without her.
Next Tuesday, we will see just how different it is without her. Are you going to watch?
Ever since it was announced that ABC fired Roseanne from her show and it will live on as The Conners, we have wondered how they are going to handle her absence.
John Goodman sat down with The Times in London and he might have spoiled what is to come on the spinoff. He told them, “It’s an unknown. I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.” It makes sense for them to go that way because how else can you explain why she left her family. Plus, they have the way out because she was addicted to opioids in the season finale and needed knee surgery.
But here is the other problem, if they focus on her death too much, then will be people want to watch a sad sitcom? Eight Simple Rules was able to do it after John Ritter suddenly past away, but Gimme A Break has some issues after Dolph Sweet passed away from cancer. Then there are shows like Good Times and The Hogan Family, that lost a lead to contract negotiations. Both shows were able to move after killing off the person who was let go from the series.
Will The Conners be able to do the same? We will just have to tune in starting on October 16th to find out. Personally, I am not optimistic because the show was pretty awful last season. How do you feel about it all?
Before John Goodman was eating at wife’s diner on Roseanne, he was eating at another woman’s restaurant in CHUD. You can see Dan Conner starting to come out of the 31-year-old actor in that 1984 movie.
Before John Goodman had four kids on Roseanne, he had only 2 using Crest Toothpaste. What do you think of the 30-year-old’s mustache in that 1982 commercial?
