Did Madonna’s new book bomb because of David’s adoption? |

It may not be true after all that all publicity is good publicity. Take Madonna. Her hellacious month of bad press concerning the adoption, legal or otherwise, of a Malawian child has turned out to be a buzz kill for book sales. "The English Roses: Too Good to Be True" has been an out-and-out bust so far. Madonna’s latest children’s book, released on Oct. 24, has sold just 9,000 copies, according to Nielsen Bookscan. By contrast, the first "English Roses" book has sold 350,000 copies since its release in 1993. But most of those were sold soon after publication. It’s not like Madonna didn’t do anything for this new book. She did interviews with Oprah, Regis, "Dateline," etc. But by the time she did them, the adoption scandal was in full force. Despite some positive feedback, Madonna has mostly been criticized for prying a 1-year-old away from his father. Rarely in pop culture history has a plan so exploded in a celebrity’s face. It probably didn’t help that this column pointed out that Madonna’s children’s books bear a warning that all proceeds go to Philip Berg’s Kabbalah organization. Of course, the irony there is that the proceeds, according to publisher Callaway Editions, go to Madonna, and then she writes the check to Kabbalah. “We have no idea what she does with the money,” says a Callaway source.

Kevin Federline has announced that he is planning to write an autobiography. The dancer-cum-rapper wants to let the public know about his life before his marriage to Britney Spears – but won’t include any content relating to the couple’s up-down relationship. Federline told the New York Post: "The book is definite. It will be a biography of my life until I met my wife, so people will better understand who I am." However, he admitted he hadn’t started work on the project, and wouldn’t be doing the writing on his own: "I haven’t done it yet. You know, I’ll get a ghostwriter in there," he added.

Victoria Beckham is currently still reeling after over 3,000 turned up to see her sign copies of her new fashion bible ‘That Extra Half An Inch’. Posh Spice was welcomed to Selfridges in London by a crowd of fans and she is still coming to terms with her popularity. She said of the turnout: “I thought I was going to have to pay my family to make up the numbers!” However, what Posh wants more then popularity is success in the fashion industry and her new book is a big step to get where she wants to be. She said of the book: “My favourite picture in the book is one of me covering my face while I’m laughing. That shot really captured who I am. “Although I don’t smile, do I? I’m supposed to be a miserable bitch.” Then smile more!!!!!

What this story does not say, is that she signed autographs for 12 hours! In fact they had to order more books so she could sign a book for everyone that was there! Good for her because I have been to signings where the celeb has left after 45 minutes leaving people who waited in line for hours with no autographs. After reading what she did, I had a new found respect for her!!!

Shirley Temple working on a second autobiography |

Shirley Temple Black took an accidental spill in the bathroom of her home in Woodside, Calif. last week and fractured her right wrist and arm. She said she’s in a cast from her fingers to the elbow. I had phoned her to discuss a new book I’d just received, "Shirley Temple, A Pictorial History of the World’s Greatest Child Star" (Applause) by Rita Dubas. The coffee-table-sized, 250-page book is an amazing, pictorial history of her childhood and her films — to the age of 12. Shirley said she had not received a copy — adding that she had not even known about the book. However, she said she knows the author, Dubas as "my number one fan — along with one in Amsterdam." And while Shirley has (and had) no participation in the book, she told me, "I’m glad she (Dubas) did it." The Shirley Temple fans span the ages and generations with the DVD releases of her classics and the Shirley Temple doll collection which continues with other memorabilia collected by the ever-increasing, ageless ranks of fans. Until her accident, Temple had been writing the second installment of her autobiography. The first was "Child Star," The current one is, as yet, untitled — or, at least she did not want to reveal the title until it is finished and in the hands of the publisher (to be set). It starts in Prague in 1968 where she had been our ambassador to the Czech Republic, having previously served in that capacity as well in Ghana, and previously a delegate to the 24th U.N. General Assembly. And earlier, chief of protocol at the White House.
