Dakota Fanning, 12 invited to join AMPAS
July 5th, 2006 under Dakota and Elle Fanning, Oscars. [ Comments: none ]

Oscar may be almost 80, but he’s still young at heart – enough to keep company with Heath Ledger and even Dakota Fanning.

On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars each year, invited 120 artists and executives to join its ranks – including such young actors as Ledger, 27, Fanning, 12, Keira Knightley, 21, and Jake Gyllenhaal, 25.

"Most people who aren’t really aware of the Academy think it’s probably a bunch of elderly people," AMPAS director Bruce Davis told the Associated Press. "They’re not thinking Scarlett Johansson and Maggie Gyllenhaal, they’re thinking really old guys. That’s a hard perception to overcome."

"Two years ago the Academy decided to slow membership growth, and to become even more selective in choosing members," Academy president Sid Ganis said in a statement. "Instead of inviting every proposed person who has achieved the minimum qualifications for his or her branch, the membership committees are selecting the most exceptionally qualified names from those lists."

The Academy will welcome new members on Sept. 20 at a reception at its Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills.

July 5th, 2006 under Vince Vaughn. [ Comments: none ]

Did the romance of Paris sweep Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston into a secret engagement while they were there together last month?

Well, if you believe Life & Style magazine, Vaughniston isn’t just engaged, they’re getting married "sooner rather than later," according to a story posted on the Internet Movie Database.

But Aniston’s rep Stephen Huvane quickly quashed any speculation today to TMZ, saying that the rumors were not true.

According to the Life & Style account, the down-on-one-knee engagement happened while the couple were in Paris promoting "The Break-Up." "Friends" quoted by the magazine claim that Aniston even invited her former mother-in-law, Jane Pitt, to the wedding, that Vaughn has gone on The Zone diet in preparation, and that Courteney Cox will be the matron of honor.

The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, has cancelled a visit to Europe scheduled for July because of minor health concerns, the Office of Tibet in Paris said.

"The Dalai Lama’s doctors told him to rest. It’s nothing serious. He’s just had a very busy schedule this year with lots of trips. He needs to rest," an official told AFP.

"So he had to take the decision to cancel all his commitments and trips scheduled for July to France, Finland and Spain," she said.

Pop star BRITNEY SPEARS and husband KEVIN FEDERLINE have dismissed rumours they are going back in front of the camera for a second series of their reality show. Recent media reports in America claimed Spears was so tired of the speculation about her marriage that she was wanted to film a second series to put all rumours to rest. Spears publicist LESLIE SLOANE ZELNICK has hit back at the reports, telling Hollywood columnist PEREZ HILTON, "Britney is not doing a second season of Chaotic. It’s not true." The first series of the show included Spears bragging about her lengthy love-making sessions and begging her future husband for sex.

Brian Heidik shoots a puppy with bow and arrow.
July 5th, 2006 under Animals, Arrested, TV Reality. [ Comments: none ]

A winner of the popular reality show Survivor was arrested Wednesday after allegedly shooting a puppy with an arrow.

Brian Heidik, 38, is charged with battery and cruelty to animals. After a pretrial hearing Wednesday morning in Douglas County Magistrate Court, he was released on bond.

During the bond hearing, Heidik told a judge he thought the dog was a coyote that has been harassing his pets, WSB-TV reported on its website.

Douglas County Chief Deputy Stan Copeland said it was a puppy.

"At about 3 a.m., his wife called to report that he was outside and that he had shot a puppy that was on his property with an arrow and planned to shoot another one," Copeland said.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, Heidik fled in his car but was quickly caught and taken back to the home where the incident occurred.

Heidik’s wife, Charmaine, and 5-year-old son were present at the home at the time of the incident, Copeland said.

Copeland said there was evidence in the home to support a charge of battery for family violence. Because the case is pending, he could not elaborate on the nature of the evidence.

Both the wounded puppy and the second puppy were turned over to animal control officials to determine who they belonged to.

Heidik did not immediately respond to a a message from The Associated Press left on an answering machine at one of two phones listed in his name in Douglasville. There was no answer Wednesday afternoon at the second number. Douglasville is 21 miles west of Atlanta.

Heidik won the $1 million prize as the sole survivor of Survivor: Thailand, the fifth edition of the CBS adventure game show broadcast from September to December 2002.
