I’ve always defended Tori Spelling, I have. I’ve always said she had a flair for comedy, especially physical comedy. But even I am terrified by Variety’s report that the Beverly Hills, 90210 grad is in talks to join the cast of Broadway’s Chicago. What next — Shannen Doherty as Velma opposite Tori’s Roxie? Actually, I may be onto something there….

Was Nick Lachey being watched in the months before he and Jessica Simpson divorced? Sources say Jessica’s manager dad, Joe Simpson, was mighty curious about what his son-in-law was up to during the seven-month separation before the marriage officially ended June 30. He particularly wanted to know what Lachey was doing on a night last spring when both Nick’s soon-to-be girlfriend, Vanessa Minnillo, and Jessica’s friend and former assistant CaCee Cobb were all in the same nightclub. "Joe called the club people after hearing Nick was there and demanded to see the security videotape," says an insider. The club declined to cooperate. According to the source: "Joe was looking to incriminate Nick. He told the club, ‘If you ever want to see my daughter there, you’ll give me what I want.’" A rep for the Simpson camp dismissed the story as preposterous.

Tom Cruise returned to Chicago – site of where he famously jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s sofa to declare his love for Katie Holmes. This time, however, his visit was to declare his admiration for Steven Spielberg during a surprise appearance at a Saturday night Chicago International Film Festival gala honoring the moviemaker. Cruise reportedly was unaccompanied at the event, and there was no talk of Holmes or their daughter, Suri. Walking out from the wings and handing Spielberg the Golden Hugo award after festival founder Michael Kutza kidded that he couldn’t find it, Cruise spoke of his admiration for the director of Jaws, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List and Cruise’s own War of the Worlds. "I had the great pleasure of meeting Steven," Cruise said, reports CBS News. Then, addressing Spielberg directly, he added: "You took me to dinner when I was a young actor. I’ve seen every one of his films many, many times. I actually study his films."
And though there had been reports that Spielberg, 59, and Cruise, 44, had clashed over the star’s behavior while on the promotional trail for last summer’s War of the Worlds – during a Today show interview, Cruise notoriously lashed out at Brooke Shields over her use of anti-depressants to treat her postpartum depression – there was no sign of any friction between the two men on Saturday.

It seems that being the King of Pop is no guarantee that you can crash any party in town. When Michael Jackson made an appearance at London’s Hard Rock Cafe, he was simply turned away. Jacko, in London to promote a Hurricane Katrina charity single, heard about the restaurant’s re-launch party and an operation burger-style mission ensued. A source told the Daily Mirror: "(Jacko’s publicist) approved it and sent a message back to Michael’s entourage to start the next stage… His security and his management arrived at the restaurant at 10.30 and also gave the thumbs up. They even found a secret back door for him." But, the Beat It singer missed his 11.15 ETA and staff said the place was simply too packed.Poor Michael missed out on schmoozing with the likes of Lord Brocket, Liberty X and Kelly Osbourne…A restaurant spokesman said: "It was just too much of a security risk. There was no diva-style tantrum though." The star’s publicist commented: "Michael was disappointed he could not attend the party as he likes Hard Rock Cafes. He’d like to come down to the restaurant before he leaves the UK." So, he’ll get that burger after all.

A US marine crew are being questioned after allegedly crashing their helicopter while trying to catch a glimpse of Hollywood star KATE HUDSON. The stunning actress was wearing a swimsuit, diamond collar and high heels on the set of YOU, ME + DUPREE in California when the chopper buzzed low overhead before crashing just yards away. Hudson, married to BLACK CROWES rocker CHRIS ROBINSON, says, "We heard this huge crash. A sort of huge plywood thing came falling on to my car from a rooftop. "Then the cops were there and the Marines were there and I’m in this outfit. "I realised what I was wearing and I said, ‘I’m sorry, can someone get me a robe?’"
