America’s Next Top Model’s writers pose a strike |
July 24th, 2006 under Tyra Banks. [ Comments: none ]

Twelve writer’s from America’s Next Top Model have apparently gone on strike due to the fact that the show’s producers denied them entrance into the Writers Guild of America, West.
In response, the writers walked away and started a (peaceful) protest outside the office, where they were joined by some WGA members and also SAG member, Alan Rosengerg.
Membership in the WGA certainly has its benefits–health insurance, pensions, payment standards, residuals and actual credit for being a writer. (The Top Model writers currently hold other titles, like “story producer,” it being a reality show and all, and don’t see any of the money that comes from the rampant repeats on VH1.)
America’s Next Top Model heads to the CW in the fall, which, along with a handful of new shows, will basically be airing a collection of favorites from UPN and the WB, including Top Model, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars and 7th Heaven.
“We have no interest in jeopardizing our positive working relationship,” the strikers said in a joint statement. “But what we are asking for isn’t unreasonable. There is a double standard being applied as our peers in dramatic television work under the protections of a WGA contract. We should too.”
In the case of an unscripted series like Top Model, writers hammer out story outlines, edit footage into workable plots and, yes, even feed people lines sometimes. Much like writing a script, only without the good actors.
“If you shoot hundreds of hours of footage, if you didn’t edit it into something, you’d have something” nobody would want to watch, WGA spokesman Gabriel Scott said. “That’s all storytelling.”

Prince Harry going to the moon? |

Prince Harry is being touted as being one of the first commercial passengers in space. The Princes are friends with Richard Branson’s son Sam, with whom Harry has reportedly spoken in some detail about the venture. The first flights on the Virgin Galactic are set to leave in 2008, with names including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Stephen Hawking reported as passengers. A spokesman for the venture said: "We would love to welcome Harry on board and are hopeful he will accept our invitation."
I tend not to believe this one, but when it comes to Branson you never know.

Bid on a dinner with Kathy Griffin |

Want to have a walk on role in a Broadway musical? Or what about an “acting Shakespeare” lesson with Lynn Redgrave? Or wouldn’t you just love to have dinner with Kathy Griffin? (Trust us, she won’t bite … much.) Well, all these fantastic dream prizes can be yours … for a price. How much? Depends on you. Starting today, these and many other incredible prizes are being auctioned to benefit the Actor’s Fund. The Actor’s fund is an organization that helps performing artists in crisis. (As if there was any other kind? Yeesh.) Seriously, the Fund is a terrific organization that provides a broad range of services for actors in TV, film and theater. Besides the wonderful prizes listed above, people will have two weeks to bid on tons of autographed memorabilia and other collectibles, tickets, and celebrity-encrusted things like dinner with Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. Hmm? Dinner with Liam and Tascha? What would we have to talk about? “Uh, hey, Liam …uh … you’re Irish, right?” (Uncomfortable silence.) “Natasha … uh … Could you pass the bangers and mash?” I think we’ll stick to bidding on dinner with Kathy Griffin. At least we won’t have to do any of the talking — that’s for sure! To find out what else is being auctioned off or to place a bid, go here. And if you do bid on the dinner with Kathy, please don’t be chintzy or we’ll never hear the end of it. Ms. G doesn’t like to be treated cheaply … except in very special circumstances. And now that she’s single, who knows what might happen!
Bravo’s The Dish
I do not know about you, but just the concept of having dinner with Kathy Griffin makes me want to lose my dinner. Now the other items are cool.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a good guy! |
July 24th, 2006 under Admirable People, Leonardo DiCaprio, Madonna. [ Comments: none ]

LEONARDO DiCaprio, who plays the hero in movies, was a real hero to two wheelchair-bound Madonna fans the other night. Francesco Clark, 28, – who worked at Harper’s Bazaar until a car accident left him a quadriplegic and now runs the Clark’s BoTanicles skin-care company – had front-row seats to one of Madge’s shows at the Garden last week thanks to his pal, Harper’s Bazaar creative director Stephen Gan. But when Madonna came onstage, the crowd rushed forward and Clark’s wheelchair was nearly knocked over. "He couldn’t see anything because people were all standing around him," said Clark’s pal, WWD writer Elisa Lipsky-Karasz. "He tried to move to the front, but no one would budge, and nobody cared. Then the security guard came over and was being rude and told him to move." At that point, DiCaprio came over and said, "Why don’t you come sit with me and I’ll just move over?" The star was at the end of the catwalk in front of a no-standing zone. Moments later, DiCaprio moved another wheelchair-bound person in next to Clark, saving her view as well.
Page Six
What a good guy! More celebs should follow his example, unlike Rosie who left her girlfriend for front row seats to see her friend Madonna. Granted having good seats on this tour is well worth the ticket price!
