On March 23rd, George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery. Before he died, he shot three episodes of The Goldbergs that were yet to air. Tonight at 8p, his final episode airs on ABC. After the episode is over, the producers, the network, and the studio put together a 45-second tribute to the show’s patriarch.

While we will be saying goodbye to Segal tonight, his character Pops’ death will not be addressed this season. Wendi McLendon-Covey, who plays his daughter on the sitcom, told a Twitter user, “And no, we would NEVER replace George in the role of Pops. If we get a season 9, we will address it then. #TheGoldbergs”

It is better they wait to give him and his character the sendoff he deserves and not rush one out. Even more importantly, ABC needs to pick up the show for a ninth season.

UPDATE: The show’s creator Adam F. Goldberg weighed in on how his show should handle his grandfather’s death.

“Tonight is George’s last episode. Fans are asking what’s planned for Pops,” Goldberg wrote. ”
“Even though my input and stories have not been used this season, I know the way to address this loss is to use my real experience of losing my Grandpa to honor George and my Pops. Hope I’m welcome S9! #JTP”

If they don’t have him work on that episode, then the sitcom does not deserve a 9th season. Let’s be honest, it hasn’t been as enjoyable without him.

George Segal passed away today at the age of 87. “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery,” his wife Sonia said in a statement.

Segal started acting in front of the camera in 1960, and he never stopped. Six years into his career, he received an Oscar nomination for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. From then on, he starred in movies and shows like The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, Where’s Poppa, Fun with Dick and Jane, and the Look Who’s Talking franchise, Take Five, and Murphy’s Law.

However, his biggest roles came later on in life. In 1997, he landed the role of grumpy Jack Gallo in Just Shoot Me. Finally, in 2013, he was cast in his last role, one he played almost to the end. He starred as the lovable Pops on The Goldbergs. He was the type of grandfather that everyone wants to have as their own. That is why today, show creator Adam F. Goldberg said this about the man he cast to play his Pops, “Today we lost a legend. It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy. By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark. I think these memories say it all…”

It is the perfect way to characterize the actor. Today, let’s keeps his magical spark alive by watching him in one of his many roles throughout his career.

He is survived by his wife Sonia and two daughters, Polly and Elizabeth, from his first marriage to Marion Sobel.

ABC is ready to make us laugh again in October
September 10th, 2020 under American Housewife, Anthony Anderson, The Goldbergs. [ Comments: none ]

The networks let us know when their unscripted shows would be back. Today, ABC filled us in when their sitcoms will be hitting the airwaves.

The Goldbergs is paying tribute to Airplane in their season premiere episode on October 21st. On that night, they will air two episodes. Then at 9p, The Conners are back on the couch. They are followed at 9:30p by Black-ish that almost didn’t premiere in the fall.

Then a week later, American Housewife will join the Wednesday lineup at 8:30p.

I don’t know who is happier about this news, me or my DVR. The latter has been feeling neglected because there is nothing for it to record.
