David Beckham will receive a knighthood in the 2007 New Year Honours, according to reports. The 31-year-old English footballer will become a ‘Sir’ for his services to the sport and to the community, the Daily Express reports today. Beckham was a pivotal figure in the successful London Olympics bid last year, as well as championing the plight of Kirsty Howard, an 11-year-old who suffers from a terminal heart defect. The paper quotes a Westminster insider as saying: "Beckham has become an enduring icon of this generation. New Labour’s spin doctors know this and are keen to reward him for his endeavors. Such an award would be seen as a popular move to the electorate." The former England captain, awarded with an OBE in 2003, recently faced heartbreak after being dropped from the national squad by new coach Steve McClaren.

The Spice Girls are to reunite – for a one-off meeting at bandmate Mel B’s mother’s house in Leeds. They once spent every day and night together on world tours, but these days the five former bandmates are more like strangers. To solve the problem, 31-year-old Mel has decided to organise a girly get-together while she’s over from Los Angeles visiting friends and family in the UK. Mel, who will marry actor fiancé Eddie Murphy in LA next month, plans to make the reunion a night to remember. The five girls – Mel B, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Mel C and Geri Halliwell – will meet up in Leeds, in order to keep away from the media glare in London. A source told the Daily Star: "Mel has come home to spend some serious time with her family and friends. Naturally she wants to get the girls together. "Mel hasn’t even had time to see Geri’s baby daughter and is really looking forward to it. At the moment she is trying to confirm the right date in everyone’s diaries as they are all busy." The Spice Girls officially split in 2001 – three years after Geri Halliwell quit. All went on to launch solo careers.

As David Beckham’s international football career comes to an end it appears he has already lined up a new job as a children’s soccer coach. And the Real Madrid player’s first pupil on his books is none other than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s adopted son Maddox. The footy-mad five-year-old has already enrolled at the David Beckham Soccer Academy in Los Angeles, and now Pitt, 42, wants the ex-England captain to give Cambodian-born Maddox some one-on-one coaching. And the middleman behind this bizarre arrangement is former Wimbledon hard man Vinnie Jones. Celebs like Robbie Williams, Jason Statham and Vinnie know each other through having a knockabout." The source added: "Maddox was being coached by an English guy over there who happened to tell Vinnie." The training request from the Fight Club star will no doubt please wife Victoria, 32, as they have been trying to establish Brand Beckham stateside for some time are keen to make friends with the Hollywood elite. The Beckhams already count Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes among their pals and are rumoured to want to move to LA after he retires from football.

Posh Spice done with music? |
September 30th, 2006 under The Beckhams. [ Comments: none ]

Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham says she is finished with music, turning her back on the industry that brought her fame and fortune. Undoubtedly one of Britain’s biggest celebrities, Beckham said while acting wasn’t on the cards for the future, a career in fashion beckoned. "I’m done with music and I’m never going to act," Beckham told Harper’s Bazaar magazine. "Fashion is what I love. I’ve dreamed of doing my own clothing line from even before I was a Spice Girl. "Now I’m able to do what I love and I’ve found I’m really good at it." Beckham, who designs handbags and jewellery, said she’s already cut her teeth in the fashion industry, creating the perfect pair of jeans. "I went to the factories and met the ladies who do the details and the men who rip and spray the fabric and worked closely with everyone to get the perfect fit. "Elle Macpherson says they are the best jeans she’s ever worn." After selling 58 million records with the Spice Girls, the one formerly known as Posh said she was prepared to put her musical aspirations behind her. "That’s in the past. I was an okay singer and an okay dancer, and I had to work at it," she said. Beckham was the last of the Spice Girls to embark on a solo career after the band dissolved, releasing a not-unsuccessful self-titled debut in 2001. But she has since made an even bigger name for herself using just that – her name. She and husband, former English soccer captain David Beckham, known as England’s "golden couple", have a sunglasses line and his and hers perfumes. There’s also a book Beckham has co-written, a personal fashion and beauty guide, set for release this month. Beckham said constant tabloid exposure – on her husband’s alleged extramarital affairs, her weight and even her newly cropped haircut – had taken its toll on her self image and her family. "We’ve had a fair amount of crap thrown at us, and it can be very upsetting," she said. "I think we are a very strong family. We love each other to pieces. You work things out if you really love someone. "It’s easy to give up, and a lot of people do. But I look back now and see it has made me a stronger person." She said years in the spotlight had given her enough of a taste of "celebritydom". "Because of our fame, we have a lot of money and it’s enabled me to do what I want in fashion. "But do I wish I could be anonymous? Of course. "I don’t need to feed my ego that way any more.
