Tonight after the football game on NBC, we are going to meet our new Extended Family.
Jim (Jon Cryer) and Julia (Abigail Spencer) were a loving couple who had two kids, Grace (Sofia Capanna) and Jimmy Jr (Finn Sweeney). But after 17 years of marriage, they got a divorce.
And now they share custody of their kids. As in, the kids stay in one house, and their parents rotate who lives there every week.
Together, they are trying to keep things amicable between them. But there is a reason they are no longer married. And that is because they don’t get along and disagree about a lot of things.
Julia is an uptight, crisis publicist who fell in love with Trey (Donald Faison), and they are engaged. Trey is an MIT graduate who owns the Celtics. He is unlike Jim, who is unorganized and still very close to his father (Lenny Clark). Jim is also jealous of Trey for obvious reasons. But they are civilish to each other.
They are a dysfunctional Extended Family, but they are still a family. And they are trying to find a way to make their new normal work. And we get to see them fail and succeed at doing this.
Extended Family is the family-friendly sitcom we need now because the Cleavers and the Nelsons are a thing of the past.
And like those shows, this series brings the laughs because there is so much chemistry between the actors who brilliantly act what the writers gave them to do.
I have a feeling that Extended Family will be around for an extended time.
Extended Family moves to its regular night on Tuesday, January 2nd at 8:30p after Night Court.
NBC was the only network who was smart enough to have live-action scripted series air in the fall. And it is paying for those freshman dramas.
That is because they announced today that they are picking up Found and Irrational for a second season.
“These shows are a testament to the incredibly passionate work of our showrunners Nkechi Okoro Carroll (‘Found’) and Arika Lisanne Mittman (‘The Irrational’), both of whom have executed their visions flawlessly,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Entertainment. “A huge thank you to the talented cast, producers and crews for their tireless commitment and dedication, which has clearly paid off with audiences making these series must-see television on both NBC and next day on Peacock.”
Due to the strikes, the Fall broadcast TV was delayed. And today, NBC announced when their Fall schedule will debut.
Along with that announcement, they revealed that La Brea is ending this season. Quantum Leap will be taking a break, and Lopez vs. Lopez, The Weakest Link, Password, That’s My Jam, and The Wall will premiere later in 2024.

While the networks are announcing the fake Fall schedules, NBC is announcing which series that debuted in the real Fall is getting additional episodes.
The Irrational, which stars Jesse L. Martin, is getting one additional episode. They filmed seven episodes before the WGA strike started in May.
But, according to Deadline, the news isn’t all good at the Peacock network. Lopez vs Lopez had its episode order cut from 13 to 10.
However, Night Court will still be filming 13 episodes for the revival’s second season.
Last week, the SAG-AFTRA strike ended after 118 days, and production is finally able to begin again. But then, I read that most shows were expected to start after Thanksgiving.
However, on my Facebook feed today, I saw that NBC’s Extended Family with Jon Cryer, Donald Faison, Abigail Spencer, Sofia Capanna, and Finn Sweeney will begin taping this Friday, and 1iota has tickets for the new sitcom.
It’s really happening! Production is really back! So while CBS announced today that their Fall lineup will debut in February, NBC is making it happen.
However, I should add that 1iota also has tickets for four other multi-camera scripted shows with their start dates: NBC’s Night Court on November 21st, Netflix’s That ’90s Show on December 1st, CBS’s Bob Hearts Abishola on December 5th, and Netflix’s The Upshaws on December 7th.
