In 1981, Merrily We Roll Along opened on Broadway and quickly closed after negative reviews.
In 2023, it returned to Broadway with Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez, and it was a huge Tony-winning success.
So Sony Pictures Classics and Fathom Entertainment decided to film a performance, and they are releasing it on the big screen.
Today, they released a trailer for it, and it looks like a lot of fun. However, there is one major problem. Because it is not live, that means we do not get to experience Groff’s spit. And that makes it less enjoyable! It is all about the spit when he is in a musical.
Merrily rolls along to theaters starting on December 4th, and you can get tickets here.
In 2003, Lindsay Mendez, Jonathan Groff, and Daniel Radcliffe took Broadway by storm with Merrily We Roll Along. The musical tells the story of three friends’ turbulent friendship throughout three decades…in reverse.
It was such a hit that it won four Tonys, including Best Revival. The Stephen Sondheim-George Furth show was initially released in 1981. It was such a bomb that it only lasted 16 performances. That was then.
This recent version was such a success that they decided to record it for a theatrical release, so that people worldwide could enjoy it. Today, Sony Classic Pictures, which acquired the distribution rights, announced that the film will be released in theaters on December 5th via Fathom Entertainment.
My friends and nieces saw it on the Great White Way, and they could not stop raving about it. So I will be there on day one to see it. I suggest you join me.
What do most people know about Jonathan Groff? They know he is a Tony Award-winning Broadway star who played the King in Hamilton and was on Glee with his best friend Lea Michele.
They also know that he is a spitter because his mouth gets really wet when he sings. So much so that people want front row seats in Just in Time so they can get covered with his DNA.
Because of the latter fact, Tony’s host Cynthia Enrivo made a joke about that before he performed on Sunday. She said, “The balcony is also the best and safest place to see Jonathan Groff sing.”
Was he offended by her joke? Not at all. He turned around, laughed, pointed at her with approval, and jumped up and down!
That is why he is the future of Broadway, and everyone loves him! He is adorably sweet and has a great sense of humor! He is going to be on the Great White Way for a very long time, like Nathan Lane, Harvey Fierstein, and Joel Grey.
Jonathan Groff was once again nominated for a Tony, this time for Just in Time, which is about singer Bobby Darin.
If you are nominated for a musical, most likely you are going to perform a number from the show, and he did.
During the Broadway production, he interacts with the audience. And he did the same at The Tonys.
Who did he choose to interact with in the audience? The most loved star in the house, after him. Keanu Reeves, of course!
How did the internet’s boyfriend react? He ate it up! And we ate his reaction up!
I don’t know who was the luckier man here. Because I would love to give Keanu a lap dance, and I would love to get a dance from Groff. So I will call it a tie!
The best part is that the Tony winner picked to light John Wick’s wick over George Clooney! Proving Clooney is so last century! While Reeves is both!
The original cast of Hamilton, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jonathan Groff, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, and Leslie Odom, Jr., reunited yesterday at The Tony Awards to celebrate the musical’s tenth anniversary.
They didn’t just stand there and pose for the cameras. Instead, they performed a medley of the show’s songs. So, it felt like you were getting all of Hamilton in four minutes and eighteen seconds.
What a performance! There were definitely some broken legs in the audience after watching that.
The only negative is that it proved that even though this was Broadway’s most lucrative year ($800 for George Clooney to bore you to tears), it wasn’t a very good one. Not like the year that Hamilton changed the game!
