One of the most memorable interviews ever to happen on late night television was when Joaquin Phoenix went on The Late Show as his rap star alter ego and gave David Letterman his most awkward sit downs. Yesterday, when the TV host was on Howard Stern’s radio show the Shock Jock wanted to know if he knew that was going to happen. Letterman told him, “I knew what he was doing ahead of time.” Did he enjoy it? He said, “I did enjoy it because it was like getting your work in on the heavy bag. It was easy. It was batting practice.” And with that that whole moment was ruined.
But it does not stop there, Letterman also admitted that he knew Jerry Lawler was going to punch Andy Kaufman during that shocking confrontation. He revealed that the late brilliant comic always let him know what he was going to do on the show beforehand.
Just like wrestling, late night TV is fake and my bubble has been busted. I am so sad.
But what makes me happy is listening to the full interview where Letterman held nothing back about his life in late night television like how crazy the publicists are and so much more.
You know how Howard Stern loves to find out about his radio show guests’ sex lives? Well Craig Ferguson is no exception. Yesterday, when the former TV talk show host was on the Shock Jock’s show, we found out that he dated one his guests before he married his wife. That guest was Sharon Stone, and the date did not go well. In fact, he said, “it worked out bad.” What went wrong? Ferguson explained, “I gotta be honest, the whole time, I was thinking about that scene in Basic Instinct.” Did he find out if she was wearing underwear on their date? Sadly, there was no chemistry between the two and they left their awkward date as talk show host and guest! So now he is left watching that movie thinking what never was.
Last month, it was revealed that Jeremy Renner broke both of his arms while doing a stunt for the comedic movie Tag. Yesterday, when he was on Howard Stern’s radio show, the Shock Jock had to know how he did it. Hawkeye told him, “I fell like 20 feet off of the back of a chairs.”
Then Stern wanted to know if he really needed to do the stunt. Renner explained why it is, “You can see my face and my body do the stunt, yeah.” Then he added, “You know, you spend so much time and money to try to create a world for people to go sit there in a chair and watch a movie you don’t want them to be like pulled of a movie because you see some guy with a bad wig try to do a stunt.”
But the actor does have his limits, he will not do anything that might cause him to break his heads. Arms are OK, the head is not!
Jimmy Fallon was on Howard Stern’s radio show yesterday and he revealed that his mother was nun. Wait, what? Then Jimmy Fallon explained that his parents met in high school, and after graduation she went off to the convent to become a nun. So how did she go from being married to Jesus to being married to his dad? He did not explain, but he did say that she only did it for a week.
Faith runs strong in his family because he also told the radio host that he actually thought of becoming a priest for a while.
Now that we know this, it explains why he has as air of innocence about him.
For 30 years, Hank Azaria has been doing more voices than anyone can count on The Simpsons and yesterday he revealed where some of them came from on The Howard Stern Show.
He told the Shock Jock that Moe the Bartender came from him doing a bad Al Pacino impression during a play with some gravelly Red the Bartender added in. Chief Wiggum is a “weird Edward G. Robinson” from the Film Noir cop days. Apu is a combination of kids he grew up with from India and the man he knew who worked the 7-Eleven near him in Los Angeles. Snake is someone he knew from college who really enjoyed his drugs. Comic Book Guy also came from his college days, he was his next door neighbor from Freshman year. Finally, Lou the Cop is a bad Sylvester Stallone impression.
Will we get any new voices from him? He said, “I think I have done every voice that I can possibly do. Every sound that I can make as a human being has been used.” Even though he says that, I am sure he will find a way.
The Simpsons celebrates it 30th Anniversary, of the first time they appeared on The Tracey Ullmam Show, later this month
