Forget the whitest song and dance number since Rob Lowe opened the Oscars. Or the flattest monologue since Kevin Spacey hosted the Tonys. The Emmys did not begin until Henry Winkler won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for HBO’s Barry.
The nicest guy in Hollywood finally won his first Primetime Emmy since he was nominated back in 1976 for playing Arthur Fonzarelli on Happy Days. Talking about that show, The Fonz and Richie Cunnigham aka Ron Howard were reunited before the show started. I am happy the Oscar winner got to see his friend bring home the statuette. Who doesn’t love that the two Arrested Development stars are still close friends after all of these years. Oh, I get it now.
Yesterday, EGOT’s membership jumped 25% with the addition of three new members. Lyricist Tim Rice, mega Broadway producer Andrew Lloyd Webber and John Legend got the final key to the door when they won the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) Emmy for producing Jesus Christ Superstar.
What is an EGOT? It is when a person wins the Emmy, the Grammy, the Oscar and the Tony award. Before last night only 12 people held that honor since 1962. Legend is the youngest person to join, did it in the second least amount of time (Robert Lopez did it in 10 years while Legend did it 12) and the first African-American man (Whoopi Goldberg was the first African-American member) to get it.
If you are like me, then you are wondering what Webber and Legend did to get the fourth honor. Webber has an Oscar for You Must Love Me from Evita and Legend won the Tony for producing the revival of Jitney.
What about Tim Rice? He said, “Thanks to all for messages re EGOT thingy. Also delighted for @OfficialALW and brilliant @johnlegend . Had to break news to John that we did not have him in mind when we wrote it in 1969-70. Also thanks to all the NBC JCS team esp. @neilmeron and late @craigzadan.”

When actresses go to awards shows, they have to lose weight and not eat all day in order to fit into their tight gowns that hug their bodies. I guess the hunger got to Allison Janney because what else can explain what else is happening in this photo. Oh wait, how about the stress of doing the red carpet and everyone asking her how Mom co-star Anna Faris doing since she split from Chris Pratt? That seems more likely.
It was so hot in LA today? How hot? So hot, Puddle of Mudd was just a puddle of sweatt.
Seriously, it was almost 100 degrees, so imagine if you are going to the Emmys and you are wearing a Tuxedo or a Floor Length Gown and you have to walk that long, never ending red carpet. You will do anything for some cool air. Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer and The Bachelor(ette)’s Chris Harrison did just that. When they weren’t sharing the portable AC with the celebs, they were using it on themselves. Which made them look like they had an Alien coming out of them, just like in that movie. What was the name of it again?
Peter Scolari was not initially invited to the Ball this year, and yet he still went home with the Gold Prince named Emmy yesterday at the Creative Emmys.
Another Peter, Peter MacNichol, was originally nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, but he was disqualified when it was determined that he had been in a little more than 50% of Veep’s episodes. Therefore, they replaced him with the Bosom Buddies star for his work as Dunham’s dad on Girls. You would think that Scolari’s chances of winning would be slim, but he won his first Emmy after nearly 40 years of making us laugh on shows like Buddies, Newhart (which he received 3 nominations) and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
Congrats on finally winning, it has been a long time coming and much deserved.
Can I tell you a little secret, I have had a crush on him ever since I first saw him on Bosom Buddies? Thus, I am so excited for him!
