The soundtrack licensing deal came about when Kurt Cobain’s widow Courtney Love sold a 25% stake in Nirvana’s song catalogue to Primary Wave Music Publishing. Love’s manager Peter Asher said : "We believe if we say yes to the right things, we can do both – make money and do the right thing for the catalogue." The episode of ‘CSI : Miami’, that is due to air in November, will feature several Nirvana with ‘Come As You Are’ set to feature most prominently. According to Forbes, the only condition that Primary Wave set was that the ‘CSI: Miami’ episode "Not feature any suicide or drug-addiction themes." Instead, the episode that will air, is about evil military recruiters. Speaking about the future use of Nirvana songs Primary Wave chief executive Lawrence Mestel said : "You will never see Kurt Cobain’s music in a fast food hamburger advertisement – that won’t ever happen. "We’re looking at things that relate to cutting-edge technologies, products that are green and eco-friendly, products that Kurt would have liked to have his music represented by."

Liev Schreiber joins CSI
October 25th, 2006 under CBS, Liev Schreiber. [ Comments: none ]

Tony Award-winning actor Liev Schreiber is joining the cast of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in his first appearance in a broadcast television series, playing the recurring role of a seasoned CSI who has established a strong reputation in various police departments across the country before joining the veteran team at the Las Vegas Crime Lab. He will first appear in the series’ twelfth episode, to be broadcast in January 2007 on CBS. "I’m a huge Liev Schreiber fan. On stage or in film, I think he’s one of the finest actors of his generation," says Carol Mendelsohn, executive producer of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. "We first sat down with Liev earlier this summer to discuss the possibility of him appearing as a recurring character on CSI. We knew it was a long shot, he really doesn’t do television. But he was patient and I think amused, as we promised that we’d create a character for him that he couldn’t refuse to play. Excitingly for us, he collaborated in this process. And we’ve got a wonderful, complex character as a result. Everyone at CSI — writers, cast, crew — is honored to have him on the show and is looking forward to working with him." "After meeting the people who run CSI, it immediately becomes apparent why it has consistently been one of the top shows on television. I am a fan, how could I say no?" says Schreiber.

How much do you want to bet he takes over for William Petersen by the end of the season?

James Woods has a full season to jump the Shark!
October 20th, 2006 under CBS. [ Comments: none ]

When is a show that loses 8 million viewers from its lead-in not a failure? When it’s CBS’ "Shark." CBS has ordered up a full season of the James Woods-driven legal drama despite the fact that it retains only a chunk of its powerful "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" lead-in. On a positive level, CBS touts "Shark" as the season’s top drama, at least in total viewers. The series averages 14.36 million viewers, including a 4.1 rating among adults 18-49. Of course, "Shark" has a lead-in that averages closer to 22.9 million viewer were week and a demo rating above 7. But back to the positives, as "Shark" has reliably finished within shouting distance of NBC’s "ER" in total viewers. The Imagine Television production has routinely thrashed ABC’s new "Six Degrees," averaging roughly 4 million viewers per week more than the J.J. Abrams produced relationship drama, which has "Grey’s Anatomy" as its lead-in. "Shark" is the second freshman CBS drama to get a back-nine order, following the solidly performing "Jericho."

CBS’s Waterfront will never see the light of a TV
October 18th, 2006 under CBS. [ Comments: none ]

CBS execs yesterday told “Waterfront” star Joe Pantoliano and his Providence-based TV crew to fugeddaboudit – the mid-season replacement series was canceled before it ever got on the air! Word from the set is that Pantoliano, who played – what else? – a corrupt Buddy Cianciesque mayor in the Warner Bros. drama, delivered the not-so-good word to the cast and crew yesterday. Four episodes of the show are in the can, but a network insider told the Track the network’s schedule is doing so well that CBS won’t need too many mid-season replacements. And if they do need any fresh blood, they’ve got a pool of shows all ready to roll. Rhode Island film office cheese Steven Feinberg, who helped skipper the “Waterfront” production, said he was surprised by the cancellation, but took the well-that’s-showbiz tack. “I thought the pilot was wonderful and it had a terrific cast,” he said, adding that the performance by “Sopranos” vet Joey Pants in the last scene in the pilot was “masterful.” “But it’s the nature of the TV beast.” Another source told us that after viewing a couple of the episodes, the network brass just wasn’t impressed.

Poor Joey Pants just can’t catch a break at CBS.
