Russell Crowe dropped out of Baz Lurmann’s movie because of money? |

Actor Russell Crowe said on Monday he quit an epic movie about the Australian outback co-starring Nicole Kidman because he doesn’t do “charity work” for major studios. The New Zealand-born Australian actor had been scheduled to star in the as-yet untitled film directed by Baz Luhrmann, but dropped out and was replaced by another Australian actor, Hugh Jackman, in June. At the time, no reason for the cast change was announced. “I just didn’t want to work on that movie in the type of environment that was being created because of the needs of the budget,” Crowe told reporters while promoting his new movie, director Ridley Scott’s “A Good Year,” in New York. “I do charity work, but I don’t do charity work for major studios.” The Luhrmann movie was due to begin production this month, but has been pushed back to February because of scheduling conflicts and budget debates with 20th Century Fox, according to the Hollywood Reporter. A spokesman for 20th Century Fox had no immediate comment. Media reports have put the budget for the ambitious film at between $150 million (79 million pounds) and $175 million. Luhrmann, director of the hit musical “Moulin Rouge,” has described the film to Australian newspapers as a sweeping romance in the same vein as “Gone with the Wind” and on the scale of David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia.” He said the film would be set in Australia from the mid-1930s leading up to the Japanese bombing of the tropical northern city of Darwin in World War Two. Crowe and Kidman were scheduled to have starred together in another Australian movie, based on the novel “Eucalyptus,” but the project collapsed last year because of difficulties with the script. “It will come around when it’s supposed to come around,” Crowe said of filming a movie in Australia. “The unfortunate thing about the way the media works these days, before the idea is even really solidified in people’s heads it’s already front page news. The film business is very complicated.”

Pete Doherty is out of rehab |

Couple Kate Moss and Pete Doherty looked jet-lagged as they arrived at Dublin airport. The pair have kept celebrity-spotters guessing for months about whether they are together. But as they strode through the airport with their arms around each other they seemed very much a couple – if a little frayed around the edges. Doherty, sporting a black cap, leather jacket and crucifix seemed to be leaning on the supermodel for support as they walked through waiting photographers. Moss was last week signed up by TopShop to design a spring range of clothes for the chain in a £3million deal. It is a remarkable comeback after her career seemed doomed last September because of allegations of cocaine use. Moss is known for setting trends and as she left Dublin Airport she wore a fashionable bright green dress with a flower pattern on it. But the 32-year-old supermodel looked far from her best. Her face was drawn and her usually flawless skin appeared blotchy. Moss and Doherty split after his drug addiction seemed to have rubbed off on the model. In the wake of the scandal over her alleged cocaine use Moss was axed by some of the high-profile companies she fronted. But in the past year, to the fury of antidrug campaigners, she has signed 14 new deals and her £11million annual income is believed to have tripled to more than £30million. And she has been reunited with Doherty as he has made repeated attempts to beat his addiction by following a strict rehabilitation programmes.

Let’s bet, how long do you think it will be before he is back in rehab?

Julie Andrews, the legendary actress and singer who is perhaps best known as the beloved star of 1965’s The Sound of Music, will be honored with a Life Achievement Award at the 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in January, it was announced Monday. "Julie Andrews is a woman of great generosity, creativity, courage, elegance and wit," SAG President Alan Rosenberg said in a statement. "She embodies and transcends the memorable roles she has created. Julie has been a positive presence in my life and continues to inspire multiple generations. I believe it is exceptionally significant to be recognized by people who do the same work you do." Andrews, who was born and raised in England, won an Academy Award in her movie debut as the magical, flying governess in 1964’s Mary Poppins. She got another Oscar nod for 1983’s Victor/Victoriaa. Younger film audiences may know Andrews best as the voice of Queen Lillian in Shrek 2, a role she is reprising for Shrek 3, due out next summer. She also starred opposite Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries.
