WTF, ABC messing with my DVR?
July 7th, 2006 under ABC. [ Comments: none ]

ABC wants MSOs (Cable companies) to disable fast forwarding on DVRs to prevent people from skipping ads. According ot MediaPost ABC and other networks have held discussions about the idea. Mike Shaw ABC President for Advertising sales came up with the genius idea and is hoping a deal will be reached soon before DVR use, currently estimated at 10%, grows more! The suits are hoping there won’t be much backlash because “consumers prefer DVRs for their ability to facilitate on-demand viewing and not ad-zapping”. They should also think about a way to disable channel changing when commercial breaks come on and straping viewers in their seats to prevent them from going to the bathroom because after all isn’t this why we use ad breaks for?!

When promotions go weird…
July 7th, 2006 under Odd, Rock Star: Supernova, TV Soaps. [ Comments: none ]

Rock Star: Supernova’s Brooke Burke and General Hospital’s Kelly Monaco are two of the beauties who will be on hand for a Tuesday mock-protest rally on behalf of NoScruf.org, an "organization" (read: Gillette promotional concept) out to stop the trend of scruffy-faced fellas. The fight-the-fuzz gathering will be held at 12:30 pm/ET in New York City’s Greeley Square, but be forewarned — out of protest, the gals are said to be growing out their own assorted follicles.

Pirates 2 is not walking the box office plank
July 7th, 2006 under Johnny Depp. [ Comments: none ]

I’m told already that, based on today’s matinees, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest will have the biggest opening of any movie in history. Since May 24th, I’ve been predicting that it was gonna kill everything at the theaters this summer, and then, based on the early tracking, that it was going to be the all-time record-breaker. Now Pirates 2 is set to steal away Spiderman’s No. 1 opening gross of $114.8 million. (Sorry, HBO, but Entourage’s Aquaman didn’t actually beat Spidey because that’s a FAKE movie.) That ka-ching, ka-ching sound you’re hearing in Beverly Hills is United Talent Agency’s Tracey Jacobs calculating her end-of-year bonus now that her longtime client Johnny Depp could rightly be considered America’s most popular actor. You go, girl! Meanwhile, I’m just sitting back and appreciating Pirates 2’s gargantuan box office haul. I’m told the movie could take in $45+ million more today if the shows from last night are included in the total. Right now, matinees are headed that way. Meanwhile, I’m told Warner Bros.’ Superman Returns will take a big hit (again as I predicted), down at least 50% to $25 million or so. Think about it: in one sector of Burbank, Disney’s celebrating while in another part of Burbank, Warner’s in mourning. Dontcha just love Hollywood?

Grumpier Old Men: The Musical coming to Broadway?!?
July 7th, 2006 under Stage. [ Comments: none ]

Composer Neil Berg, lyricist Nick Meglin and playwright Dan Remmes have been tapped by producer Jeff Gardner to convert the 1993 hit movie "Grumpy Old Men" into a Broadway musical, it was announced. Gardner previously stated that he hoped to bring the show to Broadway in spring 2008. An actor whose credits include The Wild Party, Gardner is new to the producing game. He previously produced Night Out in San Diego. Berg is perhaps the best known of the three. He scored the Off-Broadway musical The Prince and the Pauper, which opened in New York at the Lamb’s Theater in 2002. He is also the author of the family-oriented musicals, Fiona: The Mother Goose Musical and Threads. Meglin collaborated with Berg on the musical Tim & Scrooge, which played at the 2005 New York Musical Theater Festival, and will play at Queens Theater-in-the-Park this winter. Humor fans will know him for his 30 years of work as editor of Mad magazine.
Playwright Remmes, who will pen the libretto, is the author of Night Out, Three Tables and a musical adaptation of Pinero’s The Enchanted Cottage in collaboration with composer Scott Singer and 1980s pop diva Martha Davis of The Motels. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau had a late career hit with "Grumpy Old Men," in which they played two crotchety neighbors whose intense dislike for each other only grows when they begin competing for the affections of sexy new neighbor Ann-Margret. The film produced a sequel, "Grumpier Old Men," in 1995.
