Everyone was shocked when Sky Arts announced that they cast Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson in their show Urban Myths. Then we were all mortified when we saw what he looked like in the role, but no one more than his own family. All that backlash to the network Tweeting today, “We have taken the decision not to broadcast Elizabeth, Michael & Marlon, a 30min episode from the Sky Arts Urban Myths series. This decision was taken in light of the concerns expressed by Michael Jackson’s immediate family. We set out to take a light-hearted look at reportedly true events & never intended to cause any offence. Joseph Fiennes fully supports our decision.”
I understand what they were thinking, but the casting was just horrific. In this day of hair and makeup being as complex as it is there is no reason why they couldn’t cast someone like Jacko and make them look like him. Fiennes was never right for the role. Glad they listened. But then again, it might’ve all been a publicity stunt that worked out brilliantly for them. I mean, who outside of Britain, knew about Sky Arts before all of this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VztE0tFRt1E Sky Arts released the first trailer for their show Urban Myths: A Brand New Collection of Comedies and it is some of the worst casting since Lee Daniels’ The Butler. In fact, it is even worse because Joseph Fiennes is playing the late Michael Jackson. He looks nothing like the legendary singer. It is a slap in the face of his to his memory. I would say this would be a career ender, but where has he been?
The only positive thing I can say about it is Stockard Channing looks just like Elizabeth Taylor.
Jar Jar Binks is the most hated character in Star Wars history, but that could’ve been a different story if George Lucas would’ve cast Michael Jackson in the part as the late singer wanted. Ahmed Best, who got the part, told Vice he was not the original choice for the role.
When Best was asked about it, he said, “That’s what George told me. Me, Natalie Portman, and George’s kids—we were at Wembley arena at Michael Jackson’s concert. We were taken backstage and we met Michael. There was Michael and Lisa Marie [Presley]. George introduced me as “Jar Jar” and I was like, That’s kind of weird. Michael was like, ‘Oh. OK.’ I thought, What is going on?” Then hes added, “After Michael had driven off, we all go back up to a big afterparty. I’m having a drink with George and I said, ‘Why did you introduce me as Jar Jar?’ He said, ‘Well, Michael wanted to do the part but he wanted to do it in prosthetics and makeup like ‘Thriller.” George wanted to do it in CGI. My guess is ultimately Michael Jackson would have been bigger than the movie, and I don’t think he wanted that.””
I wish Lucas would’ve gone with Jackson because then I wouldn’t be the only person I know who actually like Jar Jar Binks. Would you have liked him a little bit more if Jackson played him?
Michael Jackson is one of the greatest musicians to have ever lived and Pentatonix performed almost of all of hits with just their voices. Even though, The King of Pop used a lot of instruments when he sang his hits, you would never know it as you listen to the quintet doing his tunes A Capella style.
Listening to them sing his legendary catalog reminds me how happy Michael Jackson’s music made whenever I listened to them. So if you need a smile on this Monday, then hit play and I promise you lips will be stretched from ear to ear.
If you want that feeling to continue, then you can see Pentatonix opening for Kelly Clarkson starting on July 11th. Can’t wait that long to see them, then you can watch their documentary On My Way Home on Vimeo.
Yesterday, at the Billboard Music Awards the late-Michael Jackson performed his newest song Slave to the Rhythm. How? Hologram!
I have a whole bunch of emotions about it, happiness, creeped out, weirded out, but mostly sadness because of the great talent we loss. What emotions did it bring up in you?
