The interview that has everyone talking, Craig Bierko’s sit-down with John Malkovich in a bathtub, and I got the dirt behind it!
Craig Bierko answered my probing questions about his hysterical new webseries Bathing with Bierko and new hit show on Fox Sundays at 9:30p Unhitched.
SOW: How did you come up with the idea to interview people in your bathtub?
Craig: We wanted to take the ridiculously false intimacy of a talk show – two men wearing make-up, one sitting behind a fake desk, having a fake conversation – and turn it up a notch. We just replaced the desk with a very small bath tub and made the conversation even more meaningless. Other than that, it’s just your regular talk show.
SOW: Then once you came up with the idea, how the heck did you convince someone like John Malkovich to do it?
Craig: Well, my agent handles John. We met him at his hotel and told him that we wanted to do “The Charlie Rose Show” only I’d be giving him a sponge bath in a tub. He smiled, paused and said “okay. ” I had to stop myself from asking “why?” He struck me as an incredibly down to earth man who doesn’t take himself seriously. Well, obviously.
SOW: How did you get your producer Rob Cohen aboard to do this?
Craig: I’ve known Rob since he wrote for The Ben Stiller Show. He’s famously hilarious, a highly sought after comedy writer out here – everyone thinks of Rob as being one of the funniest, driest men on the planet. We were having dinner a few months back and I pitched the idea to him. He laughed and said “let’s do it. ” That was literally all there was to it. We called our friend Dan Pasternack at SuperDeluxe.com, told him the idea and he loved it.
SOW: Is it weird bathing someone while you are interviewing them?
Craig: Are you kidding?
SOW: What is it like being filmed taking a bath with someone while interviewing them?
Craig: It was a completely unique experience – which after all is the whole point. We knew this was going to be a very odd, even uncomfortable, for the audience. I didn’t want to make it sillier than it was interesting, if that makes sense – a vaguely familiar mutation of something you see every day.
SOW: Who else do you have joining you in the bathtub?
Craig: We’re very excited, lots of people have been asking to be on the show but you’ll have to wait and see.
SOW: Oh yeah, are you naked in the tub?
Craig: How do you bathe?
SOW: So besides cleaning up in the tub, you have the only non-animated show on Fox Sundays at 9:30p called Unhitched? For my readers who might not have seen the show can you tell them a little about it and your character?
Craig: Unhitched is executive produced by the Farelly Brothers and it’s their first foray into network television. The show is about three divorced guys in their thirties, reentering the dating scene. It’s a whole new world for them and, of course, they’re older now. My character’s name is Jack “Gator” Gately and, on my first date after my wife leaves me, I, um, get raped by an orangutan. I’ll leave it at that. You’ll have to download the pilot from iTunes for further research. Better yet, watch the show Sunday nights at 9:30pm on Fox.
SOW: What is like working with the Farrerlly brothers?
Craig: They’re a great combination of being down to earth and outrageously hilarious – basically two guys you want to hang out with. I really enjoy working with them because, aside from being genuine and kind, they absolutely know what they’re doing. It’s a pleasure to work with nice people who know precisely what they want and how to get it. Makes my job much easier.
SOW: How much of the show is like your life? Like dating a woman who has a monkey or extra skin that looks like a shrimp?
Craig: I’m happy to say that I’ve never been sexually compromised by a monkey and my girlfriend has only the necessary amount of skin – she somehow ended up with just the perfect amount.
SOW: What is coming up on Unhitched?
Craig: Mayhem. You’ll see some things you’ve certainly never seen on television before. And it’s hilarious.
SOW: Will anyone from Unhitched be coming over to your house and take a bath with you in front of the cameras?
Craig: That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll wash the cast. A few of them could use it. I’m not naming names, but it’s Johnny Sneed.
SOW: Or what about the show you were on last season, Boston Legal? Did you keep that Buzz Lightyear costume?
Craig: I was very happy to leave that costume behind. It was like wearing a Volvo.
SOW: Or Dickie Roberts with a rubber duckie?
Craig: Spade grabbed the duckie, dammit. He got all the good toys.
SOW: Besides Unhitched and Bathing with Bierko, what other projects do you have coming up?
Craig: I’m just hoping to stay off of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
SOW: Are you pitching Bathing with Bierko as a TV show?
Craig: There’s been some interest but SuperDeluxe has been so great – we took our time making the first one with John – we all have day jobs – and they were unbelievably patient and supportive. You don’t always get that in the television world.
SOW: When will we see your next interview on SuperDeluxe.com?
Craig: Don’t touch that dial – we’ll be right back!
Seriously how funny are his answers?
One more tidbit I found out from him after the interview is whose bathroom they are filming Bathing with Bierko in….the incredibly talented actress and author Carrie Fisher!!! He also added about her, “She’s probably one of the nicest, most generous people I’ve ever met. A true friend.” Which is really nice to hear about a second-generation star who was in some of the biggest movies of all time!
From what I was able to tell from my interview time that I had with him, he too seems like a really nice person. So please support his incredible talent and tell all your friends about Bathing with Bierko and make sure to watch him in Unhitched on Sundays at 9:30p on Fox. BTW this Sunday Unhitched is doubly as good because it will be airing at 8:30p and 9:30p!
Thank you so much Craig Bierko!
The Big Bang Theory is the first show back on the air with all-new episodes written after the strike this Monday at 8p. Before the brilliant show makes its 8p debut Simon Helberg aka Howard Wolowitz answered a few questions I had about Chuck Lorre’s latest gem:
SOW: You Play Howard so well, what or who was your inspiration for the role? SH: Wolowitz is somewhere between James Bond and Alec Baldwin.
SOW: Your character is such a Casanova and he even lost his virginity earlier in the season, are there any more girls in your future on the show? SH: Unfortunately for now, the only girl you’ll be seeing in Wolowitz’s life is his mother.
SOW: Is the attire you wear on the show what you wear in your real life? Do you keep the clothes? Especially your Halloween costumes? SH: I don’t get to keep the clothes and it’s pretty far from what I wear in my real life. The turtleneck is really something to be reckoned with.
SOW: What has been your favorite episode yet? SH: My favorite episode was the one where Raj gets drunk & is able to speak to women. You got to really see how the 4 guys deal with each other– how we can screw each other at the
same time as we’re trying to help each other.
SOW: What type of chemistry is there between the cast? SH: Honestly, it’s like we’ve known each other forever. We spend time outside of the show together and it’s really helpful to be on the same page as people when you’re working with themâ€â€we have a shorthand and I think that makes the quality of the show that much better.
SOW: Do you feel pressure being the first show back with new episodes written since the strike? SH: No, because I have such confidence in the quality of these episodes. They’ve gotten better and in some ways, the Strike has allowed us to mature. When we come back, I think we’re going to be strong.
SOW: So what’s coming up for the rest of the season? SH: In our first episode back (3/17) the guys and I figure out a way of rigging mechanical devices through my computer so that people from halfway across the world can turn on our appliances like the coffee-maker or stereo and lamp. They do it just simply because they can. The following week’s episode (3/24) is based on a lie that Sheldon tells Penny and which Leonard is uncomfortable with, so he builds a mountain of lies to cover-up the initial lie. It’s really funny. And, in the episode we just shot (airing on 3/31), all I’ll say is that you’ll finally get to see the inside of Wolowitz’s bedroom.
SOW: When you signed on for The Big Bang Theory did you know it was going to be the hit it is? SH: No, no, no. You can’t tell. Ever. There was a moment when we were shooting the pilot and I heard the laughter from the audience and I thought, “Ok, this could be something big.†You’re always living in a constant state of insecurity, but it’s very nice to be on a show that people like.
SOW: Some of the other shows you have been on like Joey and Studio 60 sadly did not get a second season, how does it feel to have a show renewed early for one? SH: It’s unbelievable. It’s like a bonus. Working is a bonus, working on something you love is a bonus and getting to do it for a long time is the ultimate.
SOW: So How I Met Your Mother got your time slot and Britney Spears…what will The Big Bang Theory do counteract that? SH: Well, nothing violent. Maybe Avril Lavigne? Or Jamie Lynn Spears? Maybe we’ll try to get her child’s birth live on our show (laughs).
OMG! Simon Helberg is even funnier than his character and Howard Wolowitz is beyond freaking hysterical! To see Simon Helberg in even more laugh riot stuff check him out in Derek & Simon: The Show!
But back to The Big Bang Theory if you have never seen it, now is the time to start. The show will be back for 9 all-new episodes starting this Monday at 8p and it sincerely is a great fun show that everyone enjoys. I can’t tell you how many people who rarely watch or who hate sitcoms that actually love this show and are completely addicted!
So tune in to The Big Bang Theory this Monday on CBS at 8p for some intellectual humor that everyone can get!!!
Thank you so much Simon Helberg and Susan!!! And a big bang thanks to Winson!!!
Eli Roth, the brilliant writer and director of Cabin Fever and Hostel I and II will be showing some of his favorite movies on 35mm for the next few weekends at the New Beverly Cinema (Beverly and Faifax) in LA starting this Sunday and he wants us to come and watch them with him. Eli Roth told me there will be special guests at some of the screenings including rare appearance by Charles Kaufman from Troma will be there for Mother’s Days on the 20th, PJ Soles will be there for 22nd for Carrie and the big announcement is that Scott Baio will doing Q&A on Saturday, February 23rd for Zapped! I am now officially missing the Razzies to see Scott Baio talk about Zapped!!!
Besides telling me that the festival is a dream come true for him, he also answered some questions about The Greats of Roth!!!
How did The Greats of Roth come about?
After the owner of the New Beverly Cinema died very suddenly last fall, a bunch of the directors who’ve been going there for years got together to see what we could do to help them out. We were so saddened by Sherman’s passing, and we wanted to help them keep the theater going. Edgar Wright, myself, and a few others offered to program a few weeks and do our own festival to get our fans out to support the theater, and to introduce people to the theater who maybe have never seen a film there before. It was an amazing thing to see a full house at the New Beverly when Edgar did his program, and there was a real sense of a community of movie geeks just having fun seeing their favorite films up on the big screen where they belong. It was also fun for the actors in the films who maybe were underappreciated at the time to see an audience really loving their work. Edgar said he’d do his in December, and I took this slot in February.
How did you pick the movies that you are screening?
I started with a big list of double bills I’ve always dreamed of screening, and from there Julia from the New Beverly tried to track down as many as she could. I contacted everyone I knew who had print collections, but many of these films are lost. For example, I wanted to show a double bill of “Hot Dog” and “Hamburger,” two 80’s late night cable classics, but the prints are nearly impossible to track down. But we were able to get some amazing double bills, like “Torso” and “Pieces” thanks to collectors like Quentin Tarantino and Bob Murowski.
How many of these movies are your own personal copy?
One: ZAPPED! It’s my prized possession, a gift from Quentin Tarantino.
Are you worried that people might think differently of you because you are showing movies like Zapped, Caddyshack and Bachelor Party? Does that mean we might some day get a comedy from you?
Um, considering how some people feel about me now I don’t really think I could do anything to further damage my reputation. I’ve always, always, always talked about my love for 80’s sex comedies, and even before I made “Cabin Fever” I did a lot of animation that I put on the “Cabin Fever” DVD, so my fans know that there’s more to me than horror.
Which of these movies do we see in your movies like Cabin Fever and the Hostels?
“Torso” was a huge, huge, huge influence on “Hostel Part II,” as was “Cannibal Holocaust.” But with Torso I took a lot of the style, the setup, the mood, and even the actor Luc Merenda who plays the detective who stabs Jay Hernandez. He’s fantastic in “Torso.” “Pieces” was something I saw as a kid, and but it’s a total coincidence there’s an out-of-nowhere-what-thefuck?-karate moment, which I also do in “Cabin Fever.” That scene happened because the kid who auditioned, Matthew Helms, happened to be a blackbelt in Karate, so we just put it in. It was never in the script. And you think you’re being so original and then I watched “Pieces” again and was like “I completely forget they did that…” “Mother’s Day” is a huge influence on “Cabin Fever,” certainly in terms of the look and the house in the woods. That was very much “Evil Dead” inspired, but “Mother’s Day” was one of my favorite films. Also the title card for “Pieces” and “Mother’s Day” was what I was homaging when I did my title card in my “Grindhouse” trailer “Thanksgiving.” Plus I also used a lot of John Harrison’s music from “Creepshow” in “Thanksgiving,” which is showing right after “Mother’s Day.”
Did you know when you were a kid watching some of these movies that some day you would actually be making them your self?
I was dead certain from the time I was 8 years old, when I saw “Alien,” that the only thing I ever wanted to do with my life was make films. I just knew it. I also knew that growing up in Boston with absolutely no film connections that I’d have to work my ass off to get there, but I all that experience was so much fun, just because I loved being around movies. When my father took me to see “Alien,” I read the producer credit and said “I want to be a producer.” My dad said “Well Eli, you know the producer has to come up with all the money.” I asked “What does the director do?” He said “The director gets to spend all the money and tell everyone what to do.” I just nodded and said “I want to be a director.” From that point on I started watching movies by who the director was. I was very, very aware at 8 years old of who the director was and what they did. I remember being 11 saying “Let’s see the new Kubrick film,” stuff like that. I was a weird kid.
What movies are you not showing that you wish you could? Will they part of The Greats of Roth 2?
There are some films I want to try to find the original negative of just to make a print of it. Films like Fernando di Leo’s “Avere Vent’Anni” and the Israeli “Lemon Popsicles” sex comedies. Those I’d love to show. And as of right now this is just a one time thing, but if it goes well and I have the time I’d love to make it an annual event.
Will we see anything of yours during the screenings? Like a trailer for Cabin Fever 2?
Perhaps… We’ll have lots of special treats before the films.
Anything you can tell us about Cabin Fever 2?
I have no involvement in “Cabin Fever 2,” so I’m just as eager to see a trailer as everyone else. I recommended the director Ti West who I think is extremely talented and thought would do a great job, and I believe they’re in post production on it now. I’ve purposely kept myself out of the loop on all of it so I can have the enjoyment of going to see it in the theater with everyone else, not knowing what to expect.
And whatever happened to The Rotten Fruit?
I love The Rotten Fruit. I have them all in their little fruit sarcophaguses. I saved every single prop and set because I want to shoot more. I got so busy with the “Hostel” movies that I just had to put it aside. But I’ve been talking with several networks who want to get it up and running. My friend Noah Belson and I had like 20 more episodes written and I’d love to make them. Ideally I’d just have them up and running and keep making them forever, and just have them as little bonus shorts on my DVDs.
The festival line up is as follows:
February 17-19
TORSO
PIECES
February 20-21
MOTHERS DAY
CREEPSHOW
February 22-23
CARRIE
ZAPPED!

Seriously that is one awesome line up! Hope to see y’all there, let me know if you are going any of the screenings!
Thanks again to Eli Roth for taking the time to answer my questions and I wish him the best of luck with the festival!
As many of you know I love love love Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants, so when I was given an opportunity to interview Shanna Moakler I was like heck yeah. Shanna Moakler was not only Miss USA 1995, she has been on two other reality shows Meet the Barkers and Dancing with the Stars 3 so she really understands what it takes to make this show a success. Plus Shanna Moakler has 3 children including 2 daughters Atiana, 8 and Alabama, 2 so she understands that mother/daughter bond.
SOW: How did you get involved with Crowned?
SM: The producers of the show called me, Carson was already attached and I just thought how campy and fun!
SOW:What do you think of the mothers and daughters on the show?
SM: I think some are crazy! And I can't believe how some of them talk to others….but I also met some great woman who really have a great love for one another and they made my experience really fun!
SOW: Did their interactions between each other and the others shock you?
SM: I wasn't able 2 see what went on in the house, I only saw what they did on stage! So yes I'm shocked watching the shows now and seeing some of the woman's behavior! Inspire you? There were 3 teams that truly inspired me, they way they worked together, the love and respect they had for one another….and their personal stories.
SOW: Has this experience changed the way you interact with your daughters?
SM: Lol, no..I try to teach my children to have a love for life, to be confident, to treat others as they would like to be treated. And that won't ever change.
SOW: Would you do a pageant with them?
SM: Oh gosh! I don't think so…my pageant days are over, but I do love them! I would support my kids 100% if they wanted to do one.
SOW: Do you think the teams that have pageant experience had an advantage or all the teams were equal?
SM: I think the teams had a little advantage but not to much, we didn't stick to a strict pageant format, we really wanted to do challenges everyone could do and to find a "real" mother/daughter team that everyone could relate to.
SOW: What do we have to look forward to in the upcoming episodes?
SM: Well I tell everyone, this show isn't rocket science, we aren't trying to cure cancer, its a reality show, its suppose to be fun and silly yet have crazy drama and shocking moments and this show does! We do have a huge pageant finale show and it’s really cool for the finale!
SOW: What advice do you have for mothers who want to get their daughters into the pageants?
SM: The most beautiful woman to me, are the ones who are truly comfortable in their own skin, I've judged many pageants and not the most beautiful always wins, I find its the woman who radiates confidence. So I tell woman to be themselves and stand by their morals and values.
SOW: How was it being the Judge and not being judged?
SM: I LOVED it, it’s something I know a lot about and I could just relax and have fun! U see me serious a lot but the judges and I had a blast and laughed the entire time…
SOW: What do your daughters think of the show?
SM: Only my oldest has seen it and she thinks it’s silly and fun, she giggles and at the same time thinks its fun to see the teams choices….
SOW: Did you ask any of the Dancing with the Star Judges for advice on how to be on for this show?
SM: Lol! NO! I love those guys but they were really tough on me! I am a little tough but I still really want the teams to have a good time! I know how nervous they are….
SOW: Has Carson Kressley given you any fashion advice?
SM: Ugh! I wish! Next time I see him I should have him help me! We never had to much time to get into advice but god I love him, he's so fun and witty…it was a blast working with him and Cynthia!
Hopefully she will be able to get advice from Carson soon if/when Crowned gets picked up for a second season!
So tune into Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants tonight and every Wednesday at 8p on The CW. It is that perfect show to get you through the cold winter months!!! As she said it is pure campy fun and then some!!! I promise you will enjoy it it has something for everyone!
Thank you so much Shanna for taking the time to answer my questions!!! And to Suzanne for setting this up!!!
As many of you know Comedy Central’s Drawn Together is one of my favorite shows. It is an animated reality show that makes me laugh my a$$ every episode. Seriously they push the envelope time and time again, whether it is a live sex-ed demonstration or masturbation techniques or a gay bash for one of the characters coming out or the effects of steroids on the male genitalia or Indian Casinos or racism in cartoons through the years and so much more. You never know who or what they are going to offend, but what you do know is they are going to have you laughing in hysterics.
So when I read on the Drawn Together fan page on MySpace that the show will most likely not be coming back for a fourth season, I was devastated. I want to save this show because it sincerely is so brilliantly wrong and there is not enough of that on TV today.
I decided to contact show creator Matt Silverstein to find out more about his inspiration for the show, is it coming back and can we do anything to save it? Here is what he had to say and his answers are just as funny as Drawn Together!!!
How did Dave Jeser and you come up with the idea for Drawn Together?
We were working on a crappy project that wasn’t going anywhere with a network that doesn’t even exist anymore. The show they had us working on didn’t have a strong premise or a real concept and we were getting sick of trying to mold this non-idea into something real. Finally one of us said, “This isn’t even an idea for a show. And idea for a show would be, like, doing an animated reality show.†Then we both started talking more and more about what an animated reality show would be like and thought we should write it up. Plus we both love cartoons and reality shows, so it seemed like the perfect show for us to develop. Anyhow, we emailed the idea for Drawn Together to our agent. Our agent said it sucked and he could never sell such a shitty idea. So it sat on my desktop for a year until we started telling other writers the idea and they all were said we should try to sell it. So we went behind our agent’s back and got some meetings set up and finally sold it.
How did you guys go from show writers to creators? How did you pitch DT to CC?
When we sold the show, we were running Crank Yankers for Jimmy Kimmel who left to do his late night talk show. Crank Yankers back then was on Comedy Central (it’s now going to be on MTV and I’ve seen the new ones and they are GREAT). That was our connection to Comedy Central. And before we pitched it to Comedy Central, we met a young animator for the Simpsons, Jordan Young. He wanted to get out of animating and start writing comedy. We told him if he drew the characters and helped us sell the show, we’d hire him to write. So he drew up some great characters and we brought those designs into Comedy Central and they let us write a pilot and make a short presentation tape. The presentation tape sucked but somehow we convinced them to pick up the show anyway. And we hired Jordan and he’s an amazingly funny writer.
How did you pick the characters? Was there any character that you wanted to parody that was not approved by Comedy Central?
To come up with the characters, we first started with our favorite reality television types. Like the Mormon girl from The Real World. She had been really sheltered her whole life and would say things like, “I never met a gay before.†And then we thought of the typical fairytale princess and how she too was locked away in a castle and not exposed to other cultures. So we paired them up. Betty Boop and Amy from Big Brother 4, Crass Internet Cartoons and Puck, Ling-Ling and… no one I guess. We just wanted one of those on the show. As far as parodies not approved by Comedy Central, there are many characters the legal department has asked us to stay away from – like Mr. Magoo and Roger Ramjet. I am not sure why. I guess some people are just more likely to sue, so we stay away from them.
Comedy Central says you are too dirty now, what has CC’s Broadcast and Standards said to you in the past?
Believe it or not, Broadcast Standards and the censors are our biggest supporters. They fought to make the show TVMA, so we could keep the dirtier material. We love them and love working with them. But the network is scared of the FCC. We’ve heard them worry, “If we don’t police ourselves, the FCC will! Then we can’t do any of this.†Plus the PTC has been sending letters to the advertisers and all that just makes it difficult to do the kind of show we’re doing.
What is something you got through B&S that you thought you wouldn’t? What are some of the things that you have not been able to get through? Did you ever say how the heck did we get that on?
I can’t believe we got Spanky’s growing erection (in the pilot) on the air. That was insane. We put that in assuming it would have to be blurred, or cut, but no one said anything. I am sure we wouldn’t be allowed to do that now. Comedy Central has changed since we started the show.
You actually have tackled some serious issues like coming out, sex-ed, steroid abuse, cutting, and masturbation in a responsible way through humor, how hard was that for you guys?
Hey, thanks for noticing! Most people say South Park tackles real issues, while Drawn Together is nothing but fart jokes. And, sure, that’s true a lot of the time, but we do try to satirize some issues that don’t involve farting. And those episodes, like Clum Babies, are usually our favorites. They’re also really fun to write because they are usually based on our own real life experiences. We do (or at least did) have a cutter on the staff. And one of our writer’s fathers tried to kill himself right before season three, and we thought that would be a great storyline for Ling-Ling and his dad. Plus Dave was molested.
What is your favorite episode or scene of DT?
The board of education musical number, the end of clum babies, and the montage of Captain Hero and his mother where he gets raped at a frat party. But my favorite episode overall has to be The Afterschool Special. Or the one where Toot gets the Alzheimer’s. Or Lost in Parking Space Part One. But Live Action Cow is the best episode if you’re stoned.
How long does it take to do an episode? When would be the latest that Comedy Central could tell you that you were picked up for a fourth season?
It takes us about 9 months to give birth to an episode because the animation is done traditionally, by hand. And according to our really, really shitty contract, Comedy Central must pick up season four no later than six months after the airdate of the very last episode. So that means they can wait until June 2008.
Has the second half of third season been completed and when will it air? Any spoilers?
The second half of the third season is almost all done. And Comedy Central is going to sit on them until October. So, sadly, you’ll have to wait to see how they (or who) escapes the parking lot, meet the Drawn Together Babies, hang out with a lot of cereal box characters, discover Hero’s arch nemesis, and watch Spanky’s fatal attraction with a spider in “Charoltte’s Web of Lies.†Oh and Ling-Ling is put into a foster home.
What has Comedy Central told you about the future of the show?
They are annoying. Despite solid ratings, strong selling DVD’s, lot’s of iTune purchases, and they have said that maybe if all their new shows fail, then we might come back.
What can the fans do to try to save the show? Do a Family Guy and buy a ton of DVDs? Send hair like Felicity? Tabasco sauce like Roswell? Water like Invasion? Put a Ferris Wheel near-by like Everwood? What?
Sadly, I don’t believe anything can be done. All I ask is that you cherish the time we had together.
What is next for Dave and you?
Unemployment. Have you seen this show? Who the hell is going to hire us now?!!? Seriously. We’re fucked.
Sincerest thanks to Matt Silverstein for taking the time to answer my questions. I know we be seeing his twisted sense of humor on TV again soon!
Please tune into Comedy Central to watch the show and purchase the DVDs for yourself and all of friends! It worked for Family Guy, let’s try it for Drawn Together!!!
