When we last left off with The Last Man on Earth, we caught a quick glimpse of Fred Armisen as he made his debut on the brilliant, touching and funny sitcom. Tonight at 9:30p on Fox, we get to learn a lot more about his character Karl in a standalone episode.
Karl is a guy who lives on his own. The type of guy who goes out on dates with a Leighton Meester type, but goes home all by himself.
Then one day he makes a mistake and he flees to Mexico to start a new life. On the way there, he meets our special guest star of the night and they share an unforgettable moment. When he settles in Mexico, he begins his new life. Just when he decides to change his ways, the virus happens. Now everyone around him is dead and he is living all by himself.
That is until Tandy (Will Forte) and Tood (Mel Rodriguez) find him. What happens next, we will have to wait until next week to find out.
What I am not telling you, is why I will never be able to look at Armisen the same way. Why? You will just have to tune in to find out. Not only for that but all because LMOE is a witty comedy with so much heart, it will leave you starting the work week off with a huge smile on your face. As long as you don’t hone in on the fact that it is post-apocalyptic show about a virus that wiped out almost everyone on Earth and the few survivors are trying to repopulate the world. Survivors who get to live out some of their fantasies because who is going to stop them? See a fell good way to end your Sunday nights.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAplCseoz_w The X-Files is back on Fox tonight at 8p for its 11th season and so is a fan favorite. The Smoking Man (William B. Davis) is back and he reveals so much. Opening the door to so many questions answered and several more asked. So so many reveals.
Then there is Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny), the latter will be rushed to the hospital and suffer from unusual brain activity. What is going on in her head? When she wakes up she will tell Mulder and it sets up the mythology for this season.
Thankfully, it is not all mythology because I prefer the standalone episodes. Like next week, when The Lone Gunman (Bruce Harwood and Dean Haglund) return from the dead with a message from beyond the grave for their old friends.
The best episode of the 5, they released to the press, is the fourth one. That is when a mysterious stranger seems to know intimate details about Scully and Mulder. This episode also teaches us about the Mandela effect. What that means, you just have to watch.
Finally in four weeks, the unthinkable happens. I will not tell you what, but I will tell you it is something fans of the show have been waiting for since the first run.
We can say that Will & Grace and other revivals got it right, but it was really The X-Files who perfected it leading to their returns. This season is as good as the first 10. Fans, like me, are not disappointed that this show has come back for 2 more seasons after it was cancelled 15 years ago.

Then at 9p on Fox, Ryan Murphy produces a show that is very unlike him. 9-1-1 is about the first responders doing their job after the 9-1-1 operator gets the call.
Abby Clark (Connie Britton) gets the calls that put all of the wheels in motion. She is the first person they speak to, and they first person they forget about. She does not see their lives being saved, instead she hears the click on the phone when help arrives. But that does not stop her from doing the best job possible, even with everything going on at her home.
Fire Captain Bobby Dash (Peter Krause) tries to keep his men and women in order, and that it not easy. Especially with people like Buck (Oliver Stark) who is an over eager newbie. He does what he wants and that can put the others at risk.
Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) is a field Sargent with the LAPD and she is one tough woman. She will do everything to get her suspect and her experience comes in helpful when trying to apprehend the bad guy.
On tonight’s series premiere, Abby gets a call from a young girl that there is an intruder in the house and she is all alone. To make matters ever worse, she just moved and does not know her address or her mom’s cell number. Abby calls Athena to help her, but she is helpless until they find out where the girl is located. Abby is able to get a better idea where the girl is when they ping the cell tower, but it is still not good enough. The women come up with a plan to get a better idea where she is located, but will they get to her in time.
We often thank the first responders when something awful happens, and this show gives us a glimpse of how all the agencies work together to save the day. 9-1-1 is a rush of adrenaline because it covers so much in so little time. Kind of like the life of a first responder.
I will openly admit, I went into Grown-ish already hating it because Freeform cancelled Baby Daddy over it. But I gave the show that premieres tonight at 8p a chance.
The Black-ish spinoff uses a technique that the original show uses, but on this one it is does not work. You know how Anthony Anderson narrates parts of Black-ish to help you understand what he is thinking and it helps move the show forward? On Grown-ish, you are like STFU Yara Shahidi. She keeps talking about everyone and everything instead of just letting them be. To the point, I do not know who anyone is and I do not care. Plus, she is such a whiner that it makes it hard for you to like Zoey. That was even when she was doing Black-ish. To me the twins and Junior are the more interesting children.
When it comes to the rest of the show, it is about Freshmen trying to survive on the own for the first time. If the show concentrates on all of them instead of just Zoey, it might work. The show is centered around her, but it does not have to be all about her. Until it is not, I do not know how long this show can last. I am sure they will do everything to make it a hit, but at this point it will fail out pretty quickly.
Freeform needs to stay with their strengths when it comes to comedies. Over the top multicams with very funny casts. Not a half-hour dramedy without an identity. It is trying to hard to keep the Black-ish formula, instead of trying to be its own voice.
On a positive note, it is not Freeform’s worst comedy. Alone Together is one of the worst shows ever made. It is so painfully bad, I cannot believe anyone let them make it. It makes people hate Millennials even more than they already do.
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. What happens on a the flight from LA to Vegas is a very high-in-the-sky-larious sitcom debuting on Fox tonight at 9p!
Every weekend, Captain Dave Pratman (Dylan McDermott) pilots a flight on Jackpot Airlines from LA to Vegas. He is a throwback to the pilots from the ’70s. You know, the ones who drink too much, are completely full of themselves and are also pure sex machines. His co-pilot, Alan (Amir Talai), is quiet, but would do anything to be the captain.
Then there are the flight attendants, Bernard (Nathan Lee Graham) and Ronnie (Kim Matula). Bernard is the cool under pressure steward, who is the sane one in all of the madness during their short weekly journies. Ronnie on the other hand is so over the job and just like the wacky passengers on board with her.
Talking about the passengers, there are three who do the trek with them every week for much different reasons. Artem (Peter Stormare), goes there to play the games. He loves betting and will bet on anything. He is also a wheeler and dealer who loves to have fun. Nichole (Olivia Macklin) is a stripper, who tries to recruit the female passengers and get the males ones to go see her take her clothes off. Finally, there is Colin (Ed Weeks) who travels back and forth to see his son who lives in the city of sin. Sin is what him and Ronnie want to be doing but things seem to keep getting in their way.
Tonight’s episode is your typical pilot that lets you meet the people who put the nuts in airline peanuts. Next week, they contend with a man who dies on the flight and what to do with his dead body. But it is the third episode you really want to watch. That is because Dermot Mulroney guest stars as Dylan McDermott’s replacement. If you could not tell them apart before this episode, it will be even harder after you finally see the two of them acting together.
Actually, you want to check out all of their episodes because I think it is the best new comedy of the 2017-2018 season. This sitcom brings Modern Family’s Steve Levitan back to his roots of pushing the envelope comedies with heart like Greg the Bunny, Stacked and Oliver Beene. Thirty minutes of outrageous laughs that make you glad to tuned in for all of them. Plus, it is perfectly paired with The Mick, another show you should be watching to make your days feel so much better.
The last new show of the season to find out its fate, got its future handed to it today. Fox asked the paranormal comedy for 6 more episodes. According to Deadline, part of the condition for the pickup is that they change showrunners and turn it into a workplace comedy as compared to one where they seek out the strange.
When will Fox learn that is not good idea. They screwed up Breaking In when they interfered in that way and now they are doing the same thing to Ghosted. If they really want to fix a show, they need to work on Gifted. That Sci Fi show went from good to bad in 5 episodes.
2017 is coming to an end and that means that broadcast shows will be going on a winter hiatus. Therefore, we will not get be getting new episodes until 2018 soon.
Today, Fox announced their Winter schedule and not all your shows will be back in the New Year. The Exorcist and The Orville all air the season finales in December, and as of now only one will be back next season. While Seth MacFarlane’s Syfy drama will be back, I do not think the other two will be. That is unless The Gifted gets a major rework. It stated off great, but it went to barely watchable in a few episodes. Why can’t Marvel shows succeed on broadcast TV?
Then there is Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gotham, Empire and Star that will all take a longer break and return later on in the season. Maybe by then, they will also slot the final season of New Girl.
Finally, it is time for the new shows. LA to Vegas, which is my favorite new comedy of the season, debuts on January 2nd. It is perfectly paired with The Mick but both shows should air in the 8p hour instead of after Lethal Weapon. The Resident, a medical drama, is paired with Lucifer and I do not agree with that decision. I want Luci with The X-Files. What is really interesting is that Fox has nothing scheduled for Fridays at 9p.
That is Fox, The CW’s show will go on break starting on December 4th except for Valor, Riverdale and Dynasty that will have the midseason finales the following week.
