The Carol Burnett Show was not only funny because of the acting and writing, but it also made us laugh when the actors would break character and started laughing with us. Harvey Korman was an easy target and Tim Conway got him a few times. However, singling him out started during the first season.
Back in 1968. Burnett had a scene with Korman and before they started filming she told the audience a little secret. She let them know that at the end of the scene, she is supposed to hit her co-star in the head with the kitchen door. However, she added, she is not going to do it to see his reaction. Since he was backstage during her announcement, he did not hear her evil plan.
The audience sat and waited until it was time for that moment to happen. He calls out her name and nothing happens. He does it again and again nothing happens. Finally, she pulls, the door open and started laughing hysterically. She was not the only one. Korman was rolling on the floor laughing his a$$ off before it was actually a thing.
It is moments like that that made the variety show such a joy to watch. No matter how many times you a see sketch from it, it still makes you laugh out loud. As they say, they do not make it like this show anymore.
Whether you have never seen the Variety show or you just want to watch it again. It airs 11p, weeknights on Me TV because their humor never gets old.
It has been over 50 years since Vicki Lawrence wrote Carol Burnett and said she could play her sister. The letter worked because she got the job doing just that and eventually played her mother on Mama’s Family.
Even though it has been a half-century since they first met, the two of them are still friends and hang out. Having a friendship that most of us which we could have.
They might not have born as sisters, but they have become just that over all of these years.
Carol Burnett is 15 years and 11 months older than Vicki Lawrence, and that does not stop the daughter and mother from celebrating their birthdays together. Granted the younger one is the mother in this scenario which makes their relationship as funny as them.
When I think of the great comediennes, I think of these two hilarious women. Ever since the first time I saw The Carol Burnett Show, I knew that women could be hysterical. To this day, they are my idols. Therefore, seeing that they are still friends (after over 50 years) just made this gloomy day so much brighter.
Hopefully, they are someone else’s idols, and that person will have more influence than me. So much influence, they will give them a show. Who would not want to see them share the screen again? Especially since it has been 40 years, one month and a day since their variety show ended. Can you believe it has been that long? They look even better now than they did then.
Back when Vicki Lawrence was in high school, she sent Carol Burnett a letter saying that the two of them looked alike. Burnett needed someone to play her sister on her upcoming Variety show and she hired her pen pal. Thus, changing Larwence’s life forever.
Now, almost 50 years later, the two funny red heads are still celebrating their birthdays together. Here’s to them enjoying at least 50 more together because they still look great!
You know if CBS was smart, they would do a reunion show with Carol, Vicki, Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner. I bet you the four of them could still be as hilarious as they were back when they did The Carol Burnett Show all those years ago. And TV needs that and them.
Vicki Lawrence joined The Carol Burnett Show in 1967 to play Burnett’s younger sister. Now almost 50 years later, the two of them still look like they are family when they met up for dinner yesterday.
Why hasn’t one of the networks given them a reunion Variety show with Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner? I bet you would it be a ratings dream! Especially since all 4 of them are still hysterically funny!
