Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert was in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Sunday following an emergency operation to repair complications from an earlier cancer surgery.

Ebert’s vital signs appeared to be good after the hourslong operation, said Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper, co-host of the "Ebert & Roeper" movie review show.

On June 16, Ebert underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his salivary gland. Around 8 p.m. Saturday, a blood vessel burst near the site of the operation.

Ebert, 64, has had four cancer surgeries, including two on his salivary gland in 2003.

Before the June 16 operation, Ebert told Sun-Times columnist Robert Feder the salivary gland growth was a "slow-growing and persistent cancer. You live with it."

Ebert, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and Roeper taped six shows in advance so their syndicated program would continue while Ebert recuperates.

Jailed rapper LIL’ KIM has completely transformed herself during her time jail – because she spends the whole time reading spiritual self-help books. The LADY MARMALADE singer, real name KIMBERLY JONES, has been incarcerated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since 19 September (05). She is due to be released from the federal lock-up at 6 am Monday morning (03JUL06), after serving two-thirds of her 366-day sentence for lying to a grand jury about a 2001 rap-war shootout. According to her lawyer L LONDELL MCMILLIAN, the rapper’s two favourite books during her prison stay were THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE by RICK WARREN and THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS by DEEPAK CHOPRA. He tells the New York Post, "I think you’ll see the maturation of Kimberly Jones. I think Kim needed an opportunity to get at peace with herself and regroup." MCMillian insists the rapper’s time behind bars was by no means easy, saying, "She did hard labour. It wasn’t a cupcake facility. It wasn’t where MARTHA STEWART was. "She handled it very well. She didn’t complain. She accepted her responsibility. She’s extremely tough and street smart." After her release from prison on Monday, Lil’ Kim will be taken to an undisclosed location in New Jersey for processing and will then spend 30 days under house arrest at her home.

VAL KILMER has quit his latest film DARK MATTER with MERYL STREEP because of scheduling conflicts. The star’s role reportedly clashed with his new mini-series COMANCHE MOON, and he was forced to drop out. Producers have cast LEGENDS OF THE FALL actor AIDAN QUINN in the part at the last minute, according to film website moviehole.net. According to the film’s director, CHEN SHI-ZHENG, "It is a blessing to have an actor I’ve admired for a long time, AIDAN QUINN, join our production in such an important role." Quinn will play a science professor in the film, which focuses on a brilliant Chinese science student who strives to impress his mentor (Quinn) with his theories on the origins of the universe. Streep will play a patron of the university with a passion for Chinese culture.
