I went into The Rocky Horror Picture Show expecting to hate it, and the Fox production exceeded my expectations. Tim Curry and Meat Loaf have been on my To-Do list since I was kid, so this movie has a special place in my heart. Tonight at 8p, Fox broke my heart by destroying the classic cult film.
Instead of starting off with the infamous lips, we get a woman singing as she escorts people in to a movie theater. Those people are now supposed to be the audience that will represent the audiences that have been going to see the movie for decades at midnight on Friday nights.
If that was the only change, I would be OK, but it isn’t. Far from it. My iPod loves playing Dammit Janet and the version in this movie sounds different than the one I know. It isn’t only that. The pre-recorded tracks sound cheap and brassy, in fact all the tracks sounds that way and that it distracts from the telemovie.
If it was only the new arrangements that sounds bad and different, I would maybe forgive them, but it is also the acting and casting choices. The whole joke about Dr. Frank-N-Furter is he was a man poorly dressed as a woman, thus the song I am a Sweet Transvestite. Seeing Laverne Cox in the role, she looks like the woman she is and the joke and song are ruined. The rest of the cast also doesn’t get it and Adam Lambert’s death scene could not come soon enough.
Just like the ending of this reboot.
The original Rocky Horror was a great movie, and this is the community theater version of it that is playing in Dubuque, Iowa. And even their local reviewers can’t give it a good review.
