Seriously? OMG! WTF?

It’s time again to do some rumor control, suds fans! This week, NBC announced their decision to cancel Passions in order to add a fourth hour to Today. The Peacock network also made it clear that they’ll let go of Days of our Lives when their obligation to air the long-running sudser expires in 2009. (Read our in-depth report on the NBC news right here.) Now there’s widespread Internet buzz that ABC will copycat NBC’s move by adding a third hour to Good Morning America — and cancel either All My Children or One Life to Live to make room for more GMA on the network’s daytime schedule! "It is absolutely not true," an ABC spokesperson insists to TVGuide.com. "If ABC had an announcement to make, they would have made it last week at [the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena]. We’re in a good position with our daytime dramas and moving forward full steam ahead."

We're fast approaching February sweeps, which means it's time again for disaster to strike on ABC's General Hospital. As previously reported here, Kin Shriner reprises his role as GH's Scotty Baldwin this Friday, Jan. 26. Remember when ABC cryptically told us that Scotty's return would coincide with "a new storytelling technique, a first in daytime"? Well, here's the scenario: On Friday, a big explosion occurs during a fancy schmancy charity fundraiser at Jax and Carly's hotel, the Metro Court. Just like other sweeps disasters — the train collision, the Port Charles Hotel fire, the encephalitis outbreak — this one puts the lives of several Port Charles residents at risk. Right after the Metro Court blows up, the show fades to black and the clock turns back to 16 hours before the explosion. Over the course of 16 episodes, GH will play out the events leading up to the hotel blast (including a hostage crisis) hour by hour. Think of it like an afternoon soap take-off on Fox's prime-time hit, 24. "This is a very exciting time for General Hospital," executive producer Jill Farren Phelps said in a statement. "We are continually looking for ways to raise the bar in how we produce a daily drama. This is an interesting and captivating way to tell a story that will expertly intertwine all of the show's characters together."

OMG! I can't wait for that! If I didn't already watch General Hospital, I would watch to see how they are going to do that!!! 

TV Guide is reporting who is coming and who is going on Days of our Lives. Matthew Ashford, who was doing an interview with the Bradenton Herald in Florida about his upcoming movie The Unlikelys, prematurely admitted that he just signed on to play Jack Deveraux again. It will be interesting to see what they are going to do with his character now that Melissa Reeves (Jennifer) is living in Tennessee. I am not sure I can handle him with another woman because Jack and Jennifer are one of those great Soap supercouples. But I am glad that Stephen Nichols (Patch) and him will get to do a few more scenes together!
On March 1st Days will be saying goodbye to two longtime actresses Farah Fath and Judi Evans. Farah has been blogging on her site it was time to move on and I hope she finds the career she is looking for. Judi Evans told TV Guide that she is ok with departure because of the budgets cuts that NBC implemented on the show. She might be ok with it, but I am not. I am slowly preparing myself for the possible end of Days of our Lives in two years. Hopefully NBC will get a new head of entertainment who will keep Days of our Lives and not just the shows he likes that nobosy else is watching.

 

SoapNet is getting into original scripted series, greenlighting General Hospital: Night Shift, an extension of the ABC Daytime drama. The Disney-ABC-owned cable network plans to begin production on 13 hour-long episodes in a few months for a summer premiere. At a time when daytime viewing of soaps is decreasing, Soapnet is playing an ever more important role in supporting the genre, especially for its corporate parent. The network, which in January saw a 48% jump in primetime viewing year over year, runs same-day reruns of ABC's network-owned soaps, as well as some others and some unscripted soap-related originals. Night Shift will be written and executive-produced by GH's head team – Robert Guza Jr. and Jill Farren Phelps – and will explore what happens during the night shift at the hospital.

Broadcasting and Cable 

I am really curious to see what they are going to do with this! I love General Hospital even though they started to kill Alan Quatermaine on a Monday. It is a slap in the soap actor's face if they kill you any day other than a Friday.
As I keep saying I really hope SOAPnet is getting into original scripted programming on their network because when NBC cancels Days of our Lives it will have a place to go!!!
