The Carmichael Show brilliantly takes on Bill Cosby

Last year, The Carmichael Show was my favorite new show and it was one of the last ones to debut. Tonight at 9p on NBC, it is back for its second season and it is even better than it was last year.
Tonight, they take on Bill Cosby and show us every side of the issue. By the end of the episode you will understand why people are still going to see him and why others are not.
Before we get to the end, let’s start with the beginning. Jerrod (Jerrod Carmichael) decided to surprise his girlfriend Maxine (Amber Stevens West) with tickets to a comedy show; but when she finds out it is for Bill Cosby, she refuses to go because of the allegations. He still wants to see the show, so he asks his parents if they want to go. His mom (Loretta Devine) and dad (David Alan Grier) are all excited to go, until Maxine tries to convince her future mother-in-law not to go. They ask the question, how many women is it OK to allegedly rape before you turn on an idol.
Now, they are torn on what to do, so they ask for a neutral opinion from Jerrod’s ex-sister-in-law Nekeisha (Tiffany Haddish). She has no idea what is going on with Bill Cosby, so they give her his Wikipedia page to read. Which makes things even more complicated.
Will anyone go to see Bill Cosby or will they all wind up going? You just have to tune in to find out.
The thing I absolutely adore about The Carmichael Show is they take on controversial issues, and show all sides of the story. They are less bias than the news these day and more informative. Plus, you are laughing with them and not at them like you are at news networks.
I can’t say enough good things about this sitcom, so I implore you to check out the best new comedy in a really really long time.

The Carmichael Show will be back to make us laugh!

Less than a week after the season finale of The Carmichael Show aired, NBC announced that they were picking up the hilarious show for a second season. No word when it will be back, but I am sure we will see it sooner rather than later.
The Carmichael Show was a breath of fresh air, it had the feel of Norman Lear’s comedies, but with a modern vibe. Plus, the cast was all brilliant in it. Loretta Divine was born to play this role and David Alan Grier is extremely likable as the dad. When it comes to the lead, Jerrod Carmichael is perfect as himself. Seriously though, there is nothing negative to say about this show, except that we only got a 6 episode first season.
If you missed out on the show when it aired, you can watch the whole season on NBC.com, the NBC app and NBC OnDemand. If you have seen it, then you can watch it again on all of the above. You know you want to, so that you can catch all the jokes you missed the first time you watched it.
While the news is happy for The Carmichael Show, Mr Robinson got some bad news. Class was permanently dismissed. Sadly, that sitcom had a rough beginning, but eventually it did find its groove in the last two episodes. Which was too late to save it.

The Carmichael Show doesn’t shy away from the issues!

Back in the ’70s and the ’80s comedies weren’t afraid to go there with controversial topics, but then they all became Cosbified, as in sugary sweet. Well tonight at 9p on NBC, The Carmichael Show is bringing back what television has lost, its balls. They are touching on issues like Ferguson and protesting, eating healthy, LGBT, religion and guns, and most shows are afraid to touch things like that with a 20′ pole.
Recently at the NBC Summer Press Day, Jerrod Carmichael, who loosely based the show on his family, explained why he opted to do that with his show. He said, “In my own standup, I don’t shy away from issues. The show is the same principle. We kind of run towards those things. They should be discussed. They should be talked about. It should be reflected in art.”
Then he shared with us why he wanted to bring his life to television. He said, “The reason I wanted to do a show and the thing that excites me most about television, is that shared (family) experience. Then he explained, “That is how my family and I watch television and during commercials was discussion time. If I could help contribute to that then that’s mission accomplished.”
Loretta Devine, who plays his mother (and got Carmichael’s mom’s stamp of approval), gave her thoughts about the show, “You want to snap people’s heads back and they are like what?” Then she added, “I remember when Archie Bunker first came on and we were like, OMG, OMG. We want to have that feeling with our show.”
A feeling Carmichael is going for when he asked us, “Why can’t we talk about the things that people are talking about? I would love to bring what is happening in the news right into the episode.” Devine wants, “People want to discuss it. Can you believe they talked about that?” As she explained, “That’s the one thing that everyone talks about, what is happening on TV.”
While with most shows, we talk about who got killed off, The Carmichael Show gets us talking about current events. They are talking about serious issues and they are making us laugh about then. What I like about this show, is they are giving us both sides of the arguments, which is more than I can say about the news networks. Then at 10p, when the show is over, families are getting together and talking about what just happened in the last two episodes. That is what television should do, but it doesn’t. That was until The Carmichael Show was willing to go there.
People seem to want it because their numbers are improving every week. As they should because it is better than all the fall comedies combined. So strong, so funny and so enjoyable, I am hoping it will back in the fall or the latest the winter. This is a show we’ve been wanting, we just didn’t know it.
So catch up on The Carmichael Show on the NBC App, NBC.com or NBC OnDemand, and then watch the final 2 episodes of the season on NBC at 9p tonight.

The Carmichael Show is like a modern Norman Lear sitcom

Norman Lear has created some of them best sitcoms to ever grace our televisions, and up until now no one else has created a comedy as brilliant as his. Tonight at 9p on NBC, The Carmichael Show comes very close to that. The Carmichael Show is loosely based on Jerrod Carmichael’s life and his family from North Carolina.
Jerrod recently moved in with his girlfriend Maxine (Amber Stevens West) and he is afraid to tell his overbearing religious mother (Loretta Divine) that they live together. He knows his Democratic mother will never approve of it, and his dad (David Alan Grier) will just go along with whatever his wife says. To give you a hint how tough Cynthia (Devine) is, Jerrod’s brother Bobby (Lil Rel Howery) has yet to tell his parents that he got divorced from his wife Nekeisha (Tiffany Haddish) 3 months ago. Even though Jerrod does not want to tell his parents, Maxine is insistent that they do. Jerrod will do everything in his power to stop Maxine from breaking the news to his mom, even telling her that he is thinking of registering as a Republican. That revelation leads to whole bunch of very funny can of worms being opened up, and several political discussions being had.
Then at 9:30p The Carmichael Show takes on an unarmed African American teen being shot by a cop and protesting and rioting erupts from it. Maxine convinces Cynthia to protest with her and one of them gets arrested after being left behind when the police show up. How will the Carmichael men handle the situation?
What I love so much about The Carmichael Show, is not only the hilarious humor, it is one of the rare political comedies that gives you both sides of the case. Something Lear perfected and inspired this show. It’s like a modern All in the Family, with the women on the show being like the men that were on Lear’s shows.
The Carmichael Show is one of the best comedies of this and next season and I really hope that NBC picks it up for at least another one. It’s the type of show that gets you talking once you are done laughing your butt off! And with how crazy this Presidential election is turning out to be, we need a show like this one.

UPDATE: Jerrod Carmichael Tweeted this touching thank you to all the people who checked out The Carmichael Show tonight.
