Ever since Ralph Macchio and William Zabka appeared on the last season of How I Met Your Mother together, we have wanted to see the two Karate Kids do something together. YouTube Red heard our desires and they are giving us a followup to their 1984 movie. Cobra Kai is coming to the streaming site and I cannot wait for it. Especially after seeing the first video released from the series today. Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso have not aged a day in 33 years. In fact, they look even better now than they did then! Don’t you agree?
Get your Wax On because YouTube Red is doing a Karate Kid revival with Daniel son and Johnny. Not only will Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles, the 10-episode series will be a comedy.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Corba Kai “is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). The half-hour comedy follows the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations — through (what else?) karate.”
How much do you want to bet that the wheels for this series, that debuts in 2018, were put into motion when they both guest starred as themselves on How I Met Your Mother? Right then and there, we knew these two needed to do a comedy together! Thankfully someone made it happen and I for one and am beyond excited for it.
Oh, I forgot to mention that Will Smith’s production company is producing the show. To me it sounds like even he knew his son’s remake sucked and the original was a million times better.
I don’t know about you, but I always thought that Ralph Macchio played The Karate Kid. Now I am having second thoughts after Robert Downey Jr shared a photo of himself doing Danielson’s signature move. So now I am confused. They kind of look alike. They started their careers around the same time. They are both in their 50’s and yet they don’t look like it. They both worked with William Zabka. Maybe he can answer that question? Although can you trust a Cobra Kai?
So remember on How I Met Your Mother when Barney Stinson said that Daniel was really the villain in The Karate Kid, and we thought it was funny? Well, J Matthew Turner tested out that theory and maybe, Stinson was on to something.
The producers lead us to believe that Daniel was the good guy because he has as a baby face and seemed like the underdog. He might not have been. Studly Johnny wasn’t doing anything wrong until that new kid came to town and then everything seemed to go wrong for him.
So it was all Daniel’s fault, he was the bad guy.
Now, I am going to watch the movie again and I will be team Johnny. Are you still Team Daniel or did you change your mind too? Dang you J Matthew Turner!
UPDATE: Ralph Macchio‘s response to the video is perfect. He Tweeted, “Best part of “who is real bully of KK?” viral vid is the fact that everyone still cares more than 31 years later! #Relevant #Legacy #Gift” And we will still be talking about it 31 years from now.
It has been 30 years since we got to know the Cobra Kai in The Karate Kid, and they reunited for a good cause. Johnny aka Billy Zabka challenged his Karate buddies to the endure the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and Jimmy, Bobby and Tommy all accepted it. Even Mr Miyagi couldn’t prepare Tony O’Dell, Ron Thomas and Rob Garrison for the pain they were about to feel. Good thing their Sensei was there, not to support them but to push Zabka to pour the water on them. Sadly, for Martin Kove, his students challenged him and immediately sought their revenge.
Too bad Danielson aka Ralph Macchio was nowhere to be found because they have been seeking revenge on him for three decades, and it’s about time they finally got it.
BTW I have been waiting for group to host a reunion for the challenge and I am glad it was these five guys.
