How much would you pay for this wig?
June 22nd, 2006 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

Bidders flipped their wigs Thursday at a Manhattan auction where one of pop art icon Andy Warhol’s signature silver hairpieces sold for $10,800.The wig, complete with three strips of toupee tape applied to its inside, was worn by Warhol during the early 1980s. Warhol first began wearing the hairpieces in the early 1960s, and they eventually turned into fashion accessories more than a cover-up for his baldness. Presale estimates for the hairpiece were $4,000 to $6,000.

It is raining money in Wales
June 21st, 2006 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

A town-centre scrum erupted when a mystery man hurled what is thought to be thousands of pounds in the air.

Passers-by dashed across the street to fill their pockets after he shouted: ‘Who wants free money?’

People were seen scurrying to pick up the bank notes – some on their hands and knees – at the pedestrian crossing in Alexandra Road, Aberystwyth, mid Wales.

Stunned shopkeeper John Morris, 55, caught the chaos on the CCTV camera outside his fishing-tackle shop about 11am.

He said: "I was standing in the door and suddenly I saw all these notes.

"I thought it was a joke – I couldn’t believe it. "The money landed on the floor and people were looking at it.

"Then they were bundling it in their pockets. I have never seen anything like it before."

The man, who was wearing a red Welsh rugby jersey, disappeared as people dived in to grab the cash.

"No-one seems to know where he came from," Mr Morris added.

Some quick-fingered people he spoke to made off with hundreds of pounds.

He said: "I’ve met a few of them today – that’s how I knew about it being genuine, because one said he banked the money.

"Lots of people kept it and ran off. I was just standing in the door and watched what was happening."

BBC Online said: "Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed a man from Aberystwyth had thrown a sum of money in the air on Alexandra Road before driving away."

A police spokeswoman said officers were investigating a motoring offence in connection with the incident.

OMG, a real life fairy tale!
June 19th, 2006 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

It was a real-life version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears — only in reverse — when a woman came home to find a young bear eating oatmeal in her kitchen.

The bear apparently entered through an open sliding glass door, broke a ceramic food container and started eating, West Vancouver police Sgt. Paul Skelton said.

"It sounds like a nursery rhyme, doesn’t it?" Skelton said. "At least we have a health-conscious bear on our hands."

Three police officers who went to the home Thursday couldn’t get the bear to budge, so authorities let the animal finish its meal.

"The bear didn’t appear to be aggressive and wasn’t destroying the house, so they just let it do what it was doing and eventually the bear decided to make its way out of the residence and down toward a forested gully," Skelton said. "It ended the best it could."

Skelton said bears in the suburbs north of Vancouver have been coming out of hibernation as hungry as ever but later than usual but this spring because of a heavier than normal snowpack from the winter. The report Thursday was one of six complaints police said they received about bears in the area that day.

A great Father’s Day story
June 18th, 2006 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Marine Cpl. Terrence Lambert will have to wait until his return to Alabama in the fall to hold his first child, but a satellite linkup in Iraq allowed him to witness her birth on Father’s Day.

Lambert, 21, watched from a room at Alisade Air Base, near the Syrian border in Iraq, while his wife, Jodilynn, gave birth early Sunday at Jacksonville Medical Center.

Twenty-year-old Jodilynn Lambert could see her husband on a 50-inch television screen as they talked and waited until their daughter, Katherine Annalee Lambert, arrived.

"It usually takes two months for us to get a letter. So this is a big improvement," he said.

It took a month to organize the videoconference. The satellite link was set up by Freedom Calls Foundation, a nonprofit organization that keeps soldiers overseas in touch with home.

Foundation spokesman John Harlow estimated the cost at $2,000 an hour, with the connection beamed from Jacksonville, to Atlanta, to Germany, and finally into Iraq’s war zone.

Harlow said the foundation has organized connections for such events as graduations and even parent-teacher conferences. But this was the first live birth.

"There’s been a lot of people involved that have made this possible," Jodilynn Lambert said. "This is the best Father’s Day present he can ask for."
