PBS host fired for past work
July 24th, 2006 under Odd, TV Scripted Prime Time. [ Comments: none ]

The PBS Kids Sprout network has fired the host of "The Good Night Show" after learning she had appeared in videos called "Technical Virgin." The host, Melanie Martinez, had alerted network officials about one of the videos late last week and she was immediately taken off the air. "PBS Kids Sprout has determined that the dialogue in this video is inappropriate for her role as a preschool program host and may undermine her character’s credibility with our audience," said Sandy Wax, network president.Airing for three hours each evening, "The Good Night Show" airs soothing stories and cartoons designed to get an audience of 2-to-5- year-olds ready for bed. Each night, Martinez guides a puppet character into dreamland. Martinez is a stage actress and mother of a toddler.
In the two "Technical Virgin" videos _ made before she landed the children’s show job _ she spoofs PSAs about how young women can keep their virginity.
PBS Kids Sprout airs children’s programming 24 hours a day and is seen in about 20 million of the nation’s 110 million television homes. "The Good Night Show" has been temporarily replaced by cartoons while a search is conducted for a new host.

I think that is such BS, she did that before she landed the job. As long as she is not doing it while she is on the show what is it their business. Also what normal parent would let their 2-5 year old watch something called "Technical Virgin?" Actually those videos kind of sound interesting and I would like to see them!

Scotty gets a beam up date
July 24th, 2006 under Obits, Odd. [ Comments: none ]

The delayed plans to send Vancouver-born actor James Doohan’s ashes to space are back on track again, with a launch date set for this fall. Doohan, who played chief engineer Scotty on the original Star Trek TV series, died July 20, 2005, at age 85. Plans were made to send some of his ashes into space this year – it was one of his last requests – but a fire aboard a rocket in March resulted in a delay of the launch. Space Services Inc., a private Houston company, now plans the launch for Oct. 21, spokesperson Susan Schonfeld said Monday. Also on the flight will be ashes of former NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper. And there is plenty of room, so Space Services is taking reservations for other ashes as well, Schonfeld said. "He was such a beloved character that everybody wants to be on this particular launch with Scotty," she said, explaining what she said is a strong demand. "(People) want to make sure that their loved one is with Scotty." The company offers a price structure with various options, including $495 US for one gram of ashes. The company says it pioneered "post-cremation memorial spaceflights" with the launch of remains of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and ’60s pop icon Timothy Leary into space in 1997.

July 21st, 2006 under Colin Farrell, Odd. [ Comments: none ]

Actor Colin Farrell has filed a request for a restraining order against Dessarae Bradford, the woman who allegedly accosted him at a taping of the "Tonight Show." According to the documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and obtained by TMZ, Farrell alleges Bradford "accosted me during the taping of a network television show on July 20, 2006. I am concerned that her harassing behavior has escalated and may pose an immediate threat to my well-being and the well-being od my family." The request also asks that Bradford stay away from Colin’s two year-old son James and James’ mother Kim Bordenave.

To be honest I was not much into the story, but after checking out her website and her MySpace page. I am so into to this story now! This is woman is so certifiable.

And is it just me, but wouldn’t she perfect for Flavor of Love?

Strange – 18 ex-Steelers have died
July 19th, 2006 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

Eighteen men who played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers have died since 2000, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The former players have fallen to heart attacks, accidents, disease and suicide over the past six years. The Times said 16 of the 77 NFL players from the 1970s and 1980s who have died since 2000 were Steelers – more than one in five.

Four of the deaths were unusual:

  • Former Steelers lineman Steve Courson, 50, was killed last year when a large tree he was cutting down outside his Pennsylvania home fell on him.

  • Former linebacker David Little, 46, was bench-pressing weights in his Miamia home last year when he suffered a heart attack. The barbell he was lifting rolled across his neck and suffocated him.
  • Former offensive guard Terry Long, 45, committed suicide in Pittsburgh last year by drinking antifreeze.
  • Former offensive tackle Justin Strzelczyk, 36, was killed in a high-speed chase on the New York Thruway in 2004. With police in pursuit, the pickup truck Strzelczyk was driving collided with a tanker truck.

"It’s just an anomaly that we can’t explain. From an emotional standpoint it just makes you sad and makes you feel like the time we spent together was even more precious," former Steelers star receiver John Stallworth told the Times.

The newspaper said there was speculation that steroid abuse may have played a role in some of the deaths, but no hard evidence to that effect.
