Eric Stoltz ok with walking away from Back to the Future

Pulp Fiction star Eric Stoltz insists he’s happy he missed out on playing Marty Mcfly in the Back To The Future films because he would have struggled to cope with the adulation Michael J. Fox had to deal with. Producers of the time-travelling movies went to Stoltz when Fox initially turned the role down and he played McFly for three weeks. But the part eventually went back to Fox, and the rest is movie history. He tells website Moviehole.net, "I would’ve been unable to walk down the street! It’s a whole different life. I was lucky in that way. It was 20-something years ago and I rarely look back, if at all, but, in retrospect, I think just getting through that difficult period helped me realise how freeing it really was. I went back to acting school, I moved to Europe, I did some plays in New York and I actually invested in myself in a way (and) that was much healthier for me. "If I had become a massive star, I don’t know if I wouldn’t have gone into therapy. On the other hand, I would’ve been exceedingly rich, which would’ve been wonderful." Stoltz admits he has never seen footage of himself as Marty McFly and he’s puzzled why producers haven’t cut that onto a DVD release. He adds, "I don’t know why that was. They certainly don’t ask the actors’ (permission)."

I so do not believe him. I bet he regrets not doing the role. The rumor back in the day is he walked away from the role because he thought Mask was going to make him a household name. I love that movie, but it didn’t do anything for his career. Imagine what Back to the Future could’ve done for his career.
