Last week, Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Jeff Dye, George Foreman and Terry Bradshaw all traveled to Tokyo with Better Late Than Never and tonight at 10p on NBC they go to Kyoto, Japan and Hong Kong. Looks like some of them might’ve had a little too much Sake and that doesn’t sucke for us.
Kyoto also didn’t sucke for Dye because he told us at a recent press day, it was his favorite city out of the six that they went to while there were there for a month. He explained why, “Because I think, in my brain, when I travel, I want it to be different than anything I know. So any city that reminds me of something I already know, I kind of go, oh, this just reminds me of New York, or this just so I was quick to not dismiss, but to be, like, Tokyo is beautiful, but it feels like something I know.” Then he added, “And Kyoto felt like nothing I’ve ever known before. It was like a very I don’t know, like, it was a small city, and it was rich with tradition. Everyone was so excited to share with us things that I’ve never even heard of. It was just very cool.”
For Winkler what was cool, was the kids. He happily shared, “We met families, we met children everywhere that we went, and there was no language between us…George would sit down, and all of a sudden it was like these children, who had no idea who this gigantic human being was, didn’t understand him, they could have been his grandchildren. They found games to play, and punching, and sitting and jumping. It was truly emotional.”
As The Fonz said, they didn’t know who George Foreman was, but he wasn’t the only one they didn’t know. Even though the four older men on this journey are legends here in the United States, Shatner said it was a different story over there. He revealed that, “They didn’t know who we were, because the shows, certainly the shows I’ve been in, weren’t playing in Asia. And it was interesting. The only people that recognized most of us were American tourists, which we found plenty of, going place to place.” The natives might not have known who there were, but they were all still very friendly to them.
Believe it or not, before the show the octogenarian Captain Kirk had never been to Japan. Why? He joked the tickets were too expensive and no one else bought them for him. Then he got serious as he disclosed what an actor’s life on the road is like, “You know, actors go like, fly someplace, and they go to a hotel, and they do the job, and then you think, the lumpy mattresses and bad food; I want to get home. And you don’t see the location. We go on locations all the time, but never see the location. What you see is where you’re filming and the hotel you’re in, and you go there at 6 o’clock in the morning, and you get out of there at 8 o’clock at night. And I want to get home. My dogs. My dogs.”
My dogs, is how he might refer to his four new friends that he will have for the rest of his life. Dye had to this say about his now old buddies, “I learned something from each of these guys, which is my favorite thing. And maybe that’s just good casting by these guys, or whatever. But everyone had something so much different that I really enjoyed.” The comedian enjoyed learning that Shatner was the bravest and Bradshaw was afraid of everything.
Thankfully, Sake was not one of the things that Bradshaw was scared of because that makes tonight’s episode even more endearing.
Better Late Than Never has proven to be a wonderful show that takes us on heartwarming journey with five men who all got to experience many new things in several new places and came out stronger from it. We get to go along for the ride and laugh with them as we all get to learn things we never knew before about these six cities we have never been to before but will consider in the future. Plus, we get to learn more about some of our favorite actors, athletes and Jeff Dye as they discover each other in a continent of discovery.
When William Shatner, Henry Winker, George Foreman, Terry Bradshaw and Jeff Dye were in Tokyo, they appeared on the Japanese talk show Pon. The stars of Better Late Than Never had to do some wacky and wild things on it and one of those things was eat something to find out if it is candy or not candy. When the got to The Shat, he got something that looked like a bar of a soap. With a straight face he told everyone that it was candy. The two twins, who were also on it, were so intrigued by that, that they just had to try it. Only problem it was really soap. That is why The Shat is The Sh!t.
So for all of you people who wanted to see the patriarch from Sh!t, My Dad Says with a mouth full of soap, you can now cross that off your bucket list!

NBC sent Henry Winkler, William Shatner, George Foreman, Terry Bradshaw and Jeff Dye for a month to explore six Asian cities in four countries, and they will never be the same. Not the men, but the cities.
On tonight’s season premiere, their first stop is Tokyo. As they try to navigate their way to the hotel, we will learn some really interesting facts about the Japanese city. You will get to see the World’s Busiest Crosswalk and pray that they make their way to the other side. Winkler might’ve been able to stop traffic as The Fonz, but that does not work here. Once they get to the other side, they go underground to the World’s Busiest Subway Station and get lost in it. One of them loves the attention and the other four just want to get undressed and lie down in a comfortable bed.
When they finally get to the hotel that Dye, who is their tour guide, booked for them, they are in for a shock. They said they wanted to experience the culture, but had no idea that he would book them in a Capsule Hotel. You have to tune in to find out why the locals stay at these types of places. That and to see the comedian completely naked.
Somehow, the five of them get some sleep and then it is off to try the cuisine of Japan. Shatner convinces them to try a hole in the wall and one of the local delicacies. They are in for a huge surprise when they find out what he ordered for them. Good thing, Foreman brought some BBQ sauce with him because that is all Bradshaw is going to eat once he discovers what it is.
Later on that day, they go to a bar and have some beer. Did you know that is the most popular alcoholic beverage there? So popular you can buy it in vending machines and they even sell it to kids. Theirs is non-alcholoic, don’t worry. See that is a cool fact you didn’t know. That and one of them gets drunk off of just one beer. Do you think you know who the lightweight is?
It wasn’t only about the food and drinks, they also go on a one of those infamous Japanese talk shows and make fools of themselves, visit a skyscraper with a glass floor and visit Mt Fiji. I am surprised they didn’t sacrifice Dye to the active Volcano.
All in all, they had a lot of fun Tokyo and now it is off to the next city. In the coming weeks, we will watch them travel to Kyoto, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Hong Kong; and Phuket and Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I knew when NBC announced that they were going to do this show; it was going to be amazing. But exceeded my expectations. It is great to watch four legends on one show. Not only will we get to know things about them that we didn’t know, we also get to learn about the different places that they are visiting. They are going to visit tourist locations and also some hidden away areas. They are having the time of their lives, and you will be too as you watch them.
I saw this premiere episode a few weeks ago, but I wasn’t allowed to talk about it until now. I have wanted to scream it from the rooftops that this show is the best thing to happen to television in a long time. It is fun, it is real, it is educational and it pretty gosh darn perfect. It will make you laugh, leave you in awe, and make you laugh again. Mostly because these old friends can’t stop bickering, but at the end of the day, they are all still friends and Jeff Dye. Joking, he fits in brilliantly with the two actors, the boxer and the football player. While he tries to fit in with them, they are all trying to fit in in the city they are visiting. Believe me they stick out like sore thumbs, and yet they are welcomed wherever they go. And you should welcome them into your home tonight and every Tuesday at 10p on NBC.
It’s like you are right there with them. It is just a whole lot cheaper and more comfortable to watch it from your home as they do all the dirty work! And they do get dirty, but that is for another episode…

On August 23rd, my favorite new show Better Late Than Never is going to debut and the 5 celebrities really got to know each other as they toured the Orient. But there were some things they didn’t learn about each other during those few weeks and NBC asked William Shatner, Henry Winkler and Jeff Dye some more questions about themselves. Questions like Sushi or Kim Chi and dogs or cats, but then things got interesting when they asked boxers or briefs. The comedian said “boxer briefs”, The Shat revealed he goes “commando,” while The Fonz explained why he doesn’t like to sit, “I have never gone commando because it chafes.”
And now I have the image in my head of all of them with the answers they gave to that question.
Most focus on Captain Kirk being scared of small dogs. Not working. Help! Can’t picture my childhood crushes nearly or completely nude.
I know, I will think of the premiere episode when we see Dye completely naked! Better Late Than Never to have a new image in my head!
Happy Days made Milwaukee a star, so it makes sense that the city would honor the show’s iconic character Arthur Fonzarelli. They did this by giving The Fonz his own bronze statue for natives and tourists to love like we do the character. No one loves it more than Henry Winkler, so whenever he is in town he goes to visit himself.
The nicest guy in Hollywood is visiting The Badger State because he will be part of the Happy Days Live event tomorrow at Wisconsin State Fair with Ralph Malph and Potsie Weber aka Donny Most and Anson Williams.
When it comes to the statue it is better than the old Lucy, but worse than the new one. What do you think?
