Law & Order: SVU getting a new detective?
February 19th, 2007 under Dick Wolf, NBC. [ Comments: none ]

"Flags of Our Fathers" thesp Adam Beach is joining the cast of "Law & Order: SVU." Beach, who had a guest turn as Brooklyn detective Chester Lake on an episode of the skein that aired Tuesday, is in final talks to become a series regular. He’s expected to return later this season. "SVU" creator Dick Wolf first worked with Beach on "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," the HBO telepic Wolf produced. Beach has the lead role in the project, which is expected to debut in May and is already being considered one of the paybox’s key longform Emmy contenders.

Sounds like they are preparing for a change, don’t you think?

Is Law & Order ripping Andrienne Shelly’s murder from the headlines?
January 12th, 2007 under Dick Wolf, NBC. [ Comments: none ]

Here’s one real-life tragedy that did not need to be "ripped from the headlines." The story of slain actress Adrienne Shelly – an independent film star who once appeared as a guest star on an episode of "Law & Order" in 2000 – will be fictionalized in an upcoming, sources said yesterday. Shelly was beaten to death and hanged from a shower rod in her Greenwich Village apartment last Nov. 1, allegedly by an illegal-immigrant construction worker with whom she had argued. Now the NBC drama has put out a casting announcement seeking a Hispanic man to play a murderer who kills a woman after a dispute. The casting notice calls for a male Hispanic between the ages of 19 to 24 to play an illegal immigrant named José Contreras who argues with a Manhattan woman named Erin Garrett. She falls, hits her head and is knocked unconscious. Thinking he may have killed her, Contreras tries to cover up the incident by making it look like the woman hanged herself – and actually murders her in the process. Given the drama’s rapid-fire production schedule, the episode, called "The Melting Pot," could hit the air as early as next month. The actor would play a character modeled after Diego Pillco, an Ecuadorean national who had been doing work inside an apartment below Shelly’s at 15 Abingdon Square. In real life, Pillco is accused of having killed Shelly, 40, moments after a heated argument over noise and after she had called him a "son of a bitch." Police said he confessed to killing Shelly and making it appear as if she had hanged herself in her bathroom. NBC officials defended the show as fiction, and declined to offer more details. Shelly’s last film, "Waitress," is scheduled to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this month.

I wonder when SVU is going to do the episode about the singer who gets photographed without underwear and they are called in to investigate her rape.

Will this be Law & Order: SVU’s last season because NBC is too cheap?
December 15th, 2006 under Dick Wolf, NBC. [ Comments: none ]

You wouldn’t think that NBC could afford to lose a hit show right now, but that’s what may happen. Sources tell me that NBC is playing hardball with stars Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni, not wanting to pay them big increases if they stay for a ninth season next fall. “It’s not Dick Wolf,” my source says of the notoriously capricious producer. Wolf is infamous for constantly replacing and substituting actors on the original “Law & Order.” But so far the cast has remained stable for “SVU” since it launched eight years ago. NBC, however, according to insiders, doesn’t seem to care whether the show returns or not. “They’re acting like they want Chris and Mariska out of there,” says my source. Negotiations, which have gone on this week, are said to have been brutal. One thing NBC probably didn’t count on was Emmy nominations for both stars and a win last year for Hargitay. The awards and kudos have come toward the end of the series’ run and are considered surprising for a “cop” show. The awards attention, coupled with consistently high ratings, would ordinarily give actors leverage with the network. But with cost cutting and layoffs going on, NBC is said to feel that they don’t mind losing the show or starting over with new, less expensive actors. The ratings for ‘Law & Order SVU’ are what make this news all the more perplexing. The show wins its Tuesday night time slot easily every week, with an average 9.4 rating and a 16 share. Ironically, the ratings have only gone up as the fall season has plodded along, making “SVU” one of the lone shining lights in the otherwise dimmed NBC firmament. Either way, Meloni and Hargitay would leave “SVU” well off financially but even better off career wise. They are each a hot property and would likely be snapped up rival networks to star in their own series immediately. Stay tuned…

I think NBC would be making a huge mistake if they didn’t pay up! This show gets the ratings and Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni deserve the raise. And I am saying all this and I don’t watch the show!

Real life Law & Order case for Jesse L Martin
October 26th, 2006 under Dick Wolf, NBC. [ Comments: none ]

TV cop Jesse L. Martin became a real-life crime victim after returning to his hometown to shoot a film. The "Law & Order" star was eating breakfast in a restaurant Monday – signing autographs and even offering career advice to the cook, a would-be stand-up comic – when someone broke into a sport utility vehicle and stole his luggage, video iPod and dozens of autographed photos. Martin flew back to New York City a few hours later with only the clothes on his back and his wallet. A graduate of the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, Martin plays Detective Ed Green on the NBC series. He was in Buffalo to shoot an independent film, "Buffalo Bushido." "He’s lived in New York City for 20 years and has never been robbed or a victim of theft," the film’s director, Peter McGennis, said. "He comes back here and in two days he gets fleeced."

Jam!

He sounds like a good guy and that sucks that that happened to him.

Jerry Lewis to guest star on Law & Order: SVU
October 5th, 2006 under Dick Wolf, NBC. [ Comments: none ]

Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis makes a rare and dramatic guest star appearance on NBC’s ‘Law and Order: SVU’ as a homeless man who may have a clue to the brutal rape and murder of a mother and daughter. The episode, ‘Uncle" will air (Tuesday, October 10 at 10 P.M. ET/PT). When a homeless man is found in New York’s Central Park and brought in for questioning by Detectives Stabler (Chris Meloni) and Beck (Guest star Connie Nielsen), one member of the Unit is dealt an emotional blow as Detective John Munch (Richard Belzer) recognizes the homeless man as his long lost uncle, Andrew. This powerful episode deals with many societal issues including the treatment of the mentally ill and the aged. Executive Producer Neal Baer commented, "We are thrilled and inspired to be working with Jerry Lewis, a true legend and professional actor. He brings both depth and heart to this role and gives insight into how often older people with depression are misdiagnosed."
