The Golden Globes will happen, but not on NBC
October 12th, 2021 under Awards. [ Comments: none ]

Shortly after the Golden Globes aired this year, NBC announced that they would not be airing them in 2022. The reason being that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was not diverse enough, and it became public that members took gifts from studios and talent.

So, the HFPA went through a lot of changes, including adding more members of color and vowing not to receive gifts. Was that enough to change NBC’s mind? It was not.

However, they decided the show must go. A source told Variety, “The HFPA plans to recognize the performances of 2021 to celebrate the great work of the industry this past year at the 79th Annual Golden Globes.”

What that means, we do not know yet. They could do a press conference or try to find a place to televise the award show. But, they also have to find a venue to house them since they lost The Beverly Hilton.

Personally, I say take the year off. No one will miss them. It is not like there is a shortage of awards shows Far from it.

Amazon Prime Video gets into the award show business
August 19th, 2021 under Awards, Prime Video. [ Comments: none ]

There are so many award shows these days, that you can’t watch all of them. Therefore, their ratings are down and too costly for the networks. Therefore, it makes sense that broadcast would want to part ways with them, and streaming would want to pick them up.

Case in point, Amazon Prine Video announced today that they will be airing the Academy of Country Music Awards starting in 2022.

“We’re excited to continue to expand our content offerings for Prime Video customers by being the exclusive home for the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2022 and honoring the best in country music,” said Vernon Sanders, co-head of television, Amazon Studios. “Reaching this milestone with our partners at the Academy of Country Music and MRC as the first major awards show to be livestreamed speaks to our dedication and commitment to continue to both entertain and innovate for our audience.”

I have a feeling we will be getting a lot of concert events leading up to the ACMs. So it is a win/win for everyone but CBS, who used to air the ACMs.

I believe that if this does well, other award shows will do the same. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Golden Globes return that they will go Netflix. And ABC can start moving their shows to Disney+. Well, all of them but the Oscars.

The Critics’ Choice Awards steals the Golden Globes date
May 12th, 2021 under Awards, The CW. [ Comments: none ]

Critics Choice Awards

On Monday, NBC announced that they were not going to air The Golden Globes next year. Therefore, the awards show was canceled. That means that January 9th is now available for another ceremony to jump in and steal that date, and the Critics’ Choice Awards, did just that.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with The CW again and looking forward to gathering in person to celebrate the finest work of this upcoming season,” said Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin. “The 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards will mark a return to the glamorous, star-studded revelry that make these nights absolutely unforgettable.”

The CCA also needs to steal the Globes statuette to be their own because it took a lot of balls to do what they did.

Ricky Gervais didn’t kill the Golden Globes, the HFPA did
May 10th, 2021 under Awards. [ Comments: 1 ]

The Hollywood Press Association has very restrictive requirements to be a member of their group. Because of that, Hollywood has criticized the mostly white male group. This year it all came to a head, and Amazon, Netflix, and Warner Media, along with several celebrities, said they were boycotting the Golden Globes.

Even though HFPA made some changes, they were not enough. Therefore, today NBC made a tough decision.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” said the Comcast-owned network this morning, according to Deadline. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.  As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.  Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

I doubt the show will be back. There are too many award shows, and with falling ratings, the Globes are not worth their $60 million price tag. Isn’t that crazy?

We don’t miss the Daytime Emmy and the People’s Choice Awards, so we won’t miss the Globes. I hope the other organizations become controversial so we can have even less award shows. Do we need any more? I would be OK with just the EGOTs being the only ones.

Well, you miss the Globes?

The SAG Awards move away from the Grammys
January 13th, 2021 under Awards. [ Comments: 1 ]

SAG Awards

Last week, the Grammys moved their show from January 31st to March 14th because of the dangerous spread of COVID-19 in Los Angeles. The latter date was the same as the SAG Awards. I say was because today the Screen Actors Guild announced that their show will now take place on April 4th on TBS and TNT.

SAG said in the press release, “Throughout these challenging times, our industry and our union members have proven their creativity and resilience in discovering new methods of storytelling while adapting to new safety protocols and procedures. We embrace that spirit as we re-imagine the SAG Awards with a one-hour special that highlights and expands on our signature I am an Actor opening and honors the outstanding performances of the past year.”

Personally, I say we should skip awards season this year. But then again, I say that every year.
