I watched every episode of Blue Bloods, and I enjoyed the show. However, I have to admit that the show became stale during the last few seasons. Therefore, I wasn’t that upset when it was cancelled.
So when they announced that Donnie Wahlberg was going to lead the spinoff, Boston Blue, I was curious what it was going to be like and whether it would be as good.
After watching two episodes, I have a lot of faith in the future of this show.
The show still has a family all over the law enforcement spectrum who work together, and they will include Danny and his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen).
Sean has moved to Boston to follow in his family’s footsteps and become a cop. One night, while walking the streets with his partner, Jonah (Marcus Scribner), they see a fire in a building across the street and rush to rescue the people inside. The two of them see something that convinces them it is arson.
During the rescue, Sean is injured and he is hospitalized in a coma. Danny rushes to his son’s side to be there with him.
But Danny can’t just wait around for his son to wake up, so he goes and investigates the scene. While he is there, he notices someone suspicious. After he confronts the suspect, the suspect runs, and Danny runs after him.
Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) witnesses what is going on and chases after them. Since she doesn’t know Danny, she thinks he might be involved in the crime she is investigating.
So when she finally catches up to them, she only catches Danny, who has to identify himself and explain why he is looking into the crime.
When he tells her Sean is her son, she tells him Jonah is her younger brother. And with that, they decided to work together to solve the crime.
When they get back to the station, Superintendent in the Boston Police Department, Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), says that she spoke with Commissioner Reagan in NYC and that Danny is on loan to Boston to work the case.
Yes, Sarah and Lena are stepsisters, and Jonah is their half-brother.
Lena’s mom, Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), is the District Attorney of Boston. Mae was married to Sarah’s father, who was a circuit judge before he was gunned down outside the courthouse a year beforehand.
Just like the Reagans, they are a very close-knit family who have dinner every Shabbos. They are joined by Mae’s dad, Reverend Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson), who sits at the head of the table.
The Silvers spend their Fridays at the dinner table and their Sundays in a Baptist church with the patriarch of the family.
Because of everything that Danny has been through, they invite him to be part of their family, something they already invited Sean to do.
So even though the Reagans are 200 miles away from home, they feel like they are at home. And that is a good thing, especially since Danny decides to stay in Boston to be with his son.
Danny and Lena team up as partners, and it is the best partnership that he has had in the franchise. The two actors play off each other really well.
Plus, this show is much more light-hearted and less serious, and that makes it more enjoyable. They are still solving crimes, but things just don’t feel as heavy. Wahlberg gets to show off his playful, comedic side, something we did not get enough of in Blue Bloods.
Because he is not back in Manhattan with his dad as the boss, Lena is able to give him crap and call him out on things. Don’t worry, he will do the same. And that is what makes them a great team.
And they will be there to support their rookie relatives, Sean and Jonah. Unlike Jamie, neither one of them has a stick up their ass.
You get where I am going with this. Blue Bloods was more on the uptight side, while Boston Blue is much more relaxed.
So it feels like someone unplugged the show, then plugged it back in. Thus, making it more enjoyable for the viewer again. Just because it was a drama doesn’t mean it had to be so dramatic.
I, as a viewer, found myself really enjoying the show, and I can’t wait to see what else they have up their sleeves.
I love the dynamic of it all; it works for the series. Plus, you want to be at dinner and church with the Silvers. Their family might have an unconventional start, but that is what makes them so special.
I think that Blue Bloods fans will have no problem sticking around to see where it goes. And I believe that people who never watched an episode of Blue Bloods, will be finding this show and tuning in every Friday at 10p.
