In the 1990s, there was a sound we all knew, and that was the dialing sound to connect to AOL. But then came DSL, and the sound was slowly silenced. And next month, it will be silenced forever.
The internet service wrote, “AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans. As a result, on September 30, 2025 this service and the associated software, the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, which are optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, will be discontinued.”
I just have one question: how many people were still using it?
And am I the only one who is still missing AIM, aka AOL Instant Messenger? I wish they would bring it back.

We were on vacation this past weekend, and walked past a bush with some birds trilling. One bird completely emulated a 2,400 baud modem connecting to AOL. I began to laugh, both at the sound of the bird, but by the notion of that sound still holding onto some neurons in my antiquated memory.
