Beyoncé released her first Country album today, and there is a cover of Dolly Parton’s Jolene on Cowboy Carter.
We don’t know why Beyoncé chose that song in particular. But we do know that Parton has been wishing for that to happen for at least two years. And wishes do come true.
In 2022, Miss Dolly told Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, “I think she’s fantastic, beautiful, and I love her music. I would just love to hear Jolene done in just a big way, kind of like how Whitney [Houston] did to my I Will Always Love You to someone who can take my little songs and make them like powerhouses. So that would be a marvelous day in my life. If she ever does Jolene.”
Well, today is a marvelous day for Dolly. To hear Queen Bey’s take on the Queen of Country’s tune, then
Don’t hate me. It is good. But, it is not as good as what the late Whitney did with I Will Always Love You.
And let us never forget that Parton wrote both of the songs mentioned in this post on the same day.
