Before I watched Coming 2 America, which is out on Amazon Prime now, I watched Coming to America to compare the two. Also to remember what happened in the 1988 movie because I have not seen it in a long time. What was my biggest takeaway? Good things come to wait.
Had Eddie Murphy done the sequel immediately, it would not have been as good. This way, he was able to formulate a story that was fitting. Along with adding a lot of funny people to the sequel while also rehiring a lot of actors from the original.
Seriously, the best part is that so many people like John Amos, James Earl Jones, and Garcelle Beauvais came back for the second round. They are just a few of the many cast members who came back. I am beyond impressed with how many people did both movies. And I am not talking about all the dual roles that Murphy and Arsenio Hall played and played again. Saul has to be at least 100.
Now, let’s talk about the movie that takes place 30 years after the first one. Prince Akeem (Murphy) is still married to Lisa (Shari Headley), and they have three beautiful daughters (KiKi Layne, Bella Murphy, and Akiley Love).
King Jaffe Joffer (Jones) wants his Kingdom passed down to a grandson. When the King finds out that the Prince fathered a son in the Land of Queens, he sends Akeen to bring him back to Zamunda.
But wait, how did Akeem father a son? That will be explained and shown to us.
Back to the search for his son. Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) go back to Queens and meet up with some old friends who know his son. They tell him where he can find Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler). How will it go when they meet him? Better than when they meet his mother (Leslie Jones) and uncle (Tracy Morgan).
Akeem tells them they have to go back to Zamunda with him so that Lavelle can prepare to be the future King. That is when the movie really starts to get funny!
It might seem like I am not telling you a lot, and I am not. I want you to enjoy the movie as I did. We waited almost 33 years for it, so we deserve to enjoy it without too many spoilers.
I promise you will love this movie just like you did the original. It is Eddie Murphy at his best. When he is at his best, our stomachs suffer. That is because we are laughing so hard with him.
We all need a good laugh these days, and Coming 2 America delivers tenfold. Make a date with Amazon Prime because you are going to want to watch this movie over and over again. Just like you watched Coming to America many, many times.
