Hoax or not: A cat had puppies?
November 16th, 2006 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

This is Mimi, the first cat to give birth to puppies, her owner claims. Brazilian Cassia Aparecida de Souza, 18, says three of the cat’s six offspring, which were born three months after Mimi mated with a neighbour’s dog, have canine traits. A geneticist from the Passo Fundo University plans to take blood samples from the animals to verify the claim.

I say hoax because there is nothing about those puppies that is they least bit feline. What do you think?

Angelina Jolie’s bodyguards shove parents picking up their kids from school
November 16th, 2006 under Angelina Jolie, Brangelina. [ Comments: none ]

Angelina Jolie’s bodyguards allegedly roughed up parents and students Thursday at a school where she was filming scenes for her new movie, A Mighty Heart, witnesses said. The fracas began when the gates of the Anjuman-e-Islam school, which had been locked during filming, were opened to let the parents fetch their children. "This Jolie’s bodyguard called one parent, ‘You bloody Indian,’" said Mohammed Yusuf Patni, general secretary of the school’s Parent Teacher Association. "Children were pushed around." Patni, who has two children studying at the Muslim school, said "mothers were also shoved aside by the guards." Dallington TV, a British production company that organized the shoot, blamed the scuffle on photographers and television cameramen that it said rushed the school to get pictures of Jolie. "We had the full permission and cooperation of the school to film on the premises," Dallington said in a statement. "When the gates were opened to allow the parents in to collect their children, the paparazzi rushed the school causing confusion." Representatives for Jolie refused to comment. The scuffle wasn’t the first that security guards have had since Jolie arrived in India last month with Brad Pitt and their three children. In one incident, an Associated Press freelance photographer alleged that security guards protecting Jolie’s movie set in Pune had hit him and threatened him with a gun. Earlier, as Pitt and Jolie were leaving a hotel, one of their security guards manhandled a British photographer trying to take their photo, grabbing the man by his neck and verbally abusing him.

They should have stopped filming and put her somewhere when they knew the parents were coming to pick up the kids. So wrong.

Would you pay $25 to see Dreamgirls?
November 16th, 2006 under Dreamgirls. [ Comments: none ]

First, the $6 cup of coffee – now brace yourself for the $25 movie ticket. That’s the record sum that will be charged to see "Dreamgirls" for the first 10 days of its theatrical run, beginning on Dec. 15. The highly anticipated film version of the 1981 Broadway musical about a singing group resembling the Supremes stars Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. It will be showing exclusively at the Ziegfeld in Manhattan, as well as at single theaters in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The $25 ticket buys a reserved seat, a 50-page color souvenir program and a look at a lobby exhibition of costume and set designs. Moviegoers will also have "the opportunity to purchase exclusive merchandise and the film’s soundtrack in the lobby," according to the movie’s Web site. The film will be shown without commercials or coming-attraction trailers. There will be only one showing per evening, with an added matinee on weekends. Paramount, the film’s distributor, is reaching back into movie history to bring back the "road show" – or reserved-seat engagements at higher-than-usual prices. The practice was standard for big-budget Hollywood pictures into the 1960s, with blockbusters like "The Ten Commandments," "Lawrence of Arabia" and "The Sound of Music" running six months or more at a single theater with higher prices. The last official road show was "Man of La Mancha," another film based on a Broadway musical, in 1972. "Dreamgirls" is being treated much like a live theatrical presentation – although $25 is a bargain compared with the $110 and up charged for orchestra tickets to Broadway musicals – to build buzz and the film’s Oscar chances. "We wanted to bring it to audiences in a special way, and we think this road show does the film justice," Jim Tharp, Paramount’s president of distribution, told Variety. There’s one difference – road-show movies generally had an intermission. "Dreamgirls," which runs 125 minutes, will not. The last movie with an intermission was "Gandhi," in 1982. Theater owners and studios have debated for years whether tickets to popular and expensive movies should carry a premium, as well as whether prices should be dropped after a movie is running for a few weeks.

Did Michael Jackson try to back out of the WMAs?
November 16th, 2006 under The Jacksons. [ Comments: none ]

The reports from the World Music Awards in London last night are not good for Michael Jackson. He let Chris Brown perform “Thriller” and Jackson himself only sang a few lines of “We Are the World.” He is said to have been unable to hit the notes in the song, too. But I can tell you that as predicted, Jackson tried to back out of doing the show after he arrived. A backstage source said Jackson wanted to leave, and that a car was brought into the backstage area for him. Luckily, someone convinced him to stay. Jackson asked Lindsay Lohan, the show’s host, to introduce him. Sources also tell me the show – which was taped live for broadcast—was very disorganized and poorly planned. Jackson and his entourage were—maybe still are being—put up at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel after enduring a night at the four-star Soho hotel, Hempel House. That stay was peculiar in and of itself since the Hempel is on a side street and has little protection from fans and the public. Meantime, the roar of bad press can be read this morning in London, where Jackson is raked over the coals in every single newspaper for an embarrassing performance. It turns out the appearance at the World Music Awards was, as predicted, a terrible idea. From the descriptions, it was poorly and hastily produced, under rehearsed, and undirected. This should come has no surprise since Jackson hasn’t got a proper manager or any handlers who know anything about show business—just a nanny and a press rep. But Jackson has so systematically destroyed all his relationships, there isn’t anyone left to take charge of his bizarre, downwardly spiraling career.

Maybe it would have been better if he did…
