Disney will make some workers walk the plank
July 12th, 2006 under Pirates of the Caribbean. [ Comments: none ]

Even as it basks in the box office glory of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest," Disney is using the opportunity to tighten its belt. The Mouse House will announce within the next 10 days that it’s cutting back on the number of films it makes to around eight per year — it currently releases around 18 — and will substantially reduce its workforce. All movies will be Disney-branded, meaning companies like Touchstone could be vastly diminished.
The cutbacks will be far greater than many anticipated, as Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook looks to reinvent the architecture of his studio. Move reflects an effort to improve the studio’s return on investment and get infrastructure back into line.
While Disney’s having a grand summer with "Pirates" and with Pixar’s "Cars," this year has seen some major misfires: "Stick It," "Annapolis," "Stay Alive" and especially "The Wild."So while the general population wonders how a studio can claim "money problems" after a record-breaking opening — "Pirates" took in a whopping $135 million in its first weekend, and business is brisk even midweek as it heads into another huge weekend — the move re-emphasizes the fact that studios are looking to cut costs amid increasing overhead, production budgets and marketing bills.

Silly me thinking that cheap Dinsey would give their employees a bonus for Pirates not a pink slip.

Why, oh why are they remaking Adventures in Babysitting with Raven?
July 11th, 2006 under Stupid Sequels/Remakes. [ Comments: none ]

Raven-Symone, star of "That’s So Raven," is attached to star in the Walt Disney Pictures remake of "Adventures in Babysitting." Symone also has signed an acting and producing deal with Disney that includes a guaranteed pay or play on one movie, with an option for a second. It is uncertain whether "Babysitting" will be part of that deal. The 1987 "Babysitting," which starred Elisabeth Shue, followed a high school senior who gets stuck baby-sitting a bunch of kids. The dull night is interrupted when she gets a call for help from a friend stuck downtown, leading her and the kids into a night of misadventures. The movie marked the directorial debut of Chris Columbus.

What happens when two Supernovas collide? Lawsuit. A Southern California rock band called Supernova has filed a complaint against Mark Burnett’s CBS reality show "Rock Star: Supernova," saying it had the name first. The complaint, filed June 27 in U.S. District Court, claiming unfair competition and trademark infringement, seeks to bar the show and its participants from using the Supernova name. It is also asks for compensatory and punitive damages.
"Our clients believe they have the superior right on the mark Supernova," the band’s attorney, John Mizhir, told The Associated Press Tuesday, adding that the band "has a long-standing common-law trademark right to the mark."
The group first performed under the name Supernova in 1991, according to the lawsuit. The band released several singles and three full-length albums under the name, the lawsuit says. The CBS show using the name first aired July 5. "Rock Star: Supernova" follows 15 contestants who aspire to become the lead singer of Supernova, a new rock band that includes former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. The winner will tour with the band and appear on its album.According to the lawsuit, representatives for Mark Burnett Productions ("Survivor," "The Apprentice") filed seven U.S. trademark applications for the name Supernova and two for "Rock Star: Supernova."Gary Hecker, an attorney for Mark Burnett Productions, said the company has the legal right to the name."The complaint is without merit," he said.Because the lawsuit has not yet been served, its defendants _ Burnett, CBS, Lee, Clarke and Newsted _ "do not have an obligation" to answer it, Hecker said.

First they give him a roast, then he is toast
July 11th, 2006 under TV Reality. [ Comments: none ]

I was so bummed that he was kicked off Last Comic Standing for having a blackberry because I was really looking forward to seeing his routine.
But at least the short girl and the tall girl are gone.
