Tonight at 9p on ABC, Modern Family is doing something no other scripted show has ever done before. The episode was shot using only Apple products like the iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro. It sounds like it won’t work, but is the show’s best episode so far.
Claire (Julie Bowen) is in Chicago for a business trip. While waiting to board her flight at O’Hare airport, she decides to check in with her family. That turns out to be a really big mistake on her part.
Before she left on her trip, she got into a fight with Hayley (Sarah Hyland) and she hasn’t been able to get in touch with her ever since.
First she Facetime’s with Phil (Ty Burrell) to check on the kids, but he is too busy playing with his new game to know where they are. Then she asks Alex (Ariel Winter) if she knows where her sister is and she doesn’t. She decides to let it go when she checks Facebook and she realizes she forgot her brother Mitchell’s (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) birthday. While Facetiming with her dad (Ed O’Niell) she asks him if he remembered and he did. Calling his son on the phone is something that Jay can figure out, Facetiming is not something he has quite yet mastered.
Next up she calls her brother to wish him a happy birthday. While talking to her brother and his his husband (Eric Stonestreet) she wants to see if they know where Hayley is, and then Alex calls in. Claire begs her daughter to call her sister, but she refuses. Alex tells her mom to check Hayley’s Facebook and her daughter has changed her status to married. Now all the Pritchards are trying to find out if Hayley really got married and to whom in less that 20 minutes. That is the amount of time she has before she has to board the plane to LA.
If that is not enough to drive her crazy, Luke (Nolan Gould) asked Gloria to give him a mohawk. Claire didn’t know anything about it and she is upset by it.
While that is the plot and it totally works, there is more to this episode. The episode is all seen from the perspective of Claire’s computer. So the whole episode takes place on her computer screen. You see her Facetime with her family, check websites and Facebook, look at pictures in her gallery and watch videos like the fight she had with Hayley.
If you are reading this, then you are computer literate, so you’ve done what Claire has done a million times. You just have never seen it done by a TV show before, and a sitcom that does it so brilliantly. So check out something that has never been done before, but will most likely be done time and time again.
