On Monday night, Donald Trump returned to the White House after his brief stint at Walter Reed Medical Center for COVID-19, and he waved to the press below him from the balcony. A lot of people, including Patti LuPone, thought it reminded them of the scene from the Evita when Eva Peron sings Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from her balcony.
They were not the only ones. The Lincoln Project thought the same thing. Therefore, they rewrote that song for Trump. Now it is Don’t Cry For Me White House Staffers.
Who knew that Tim Rice’s lyrics from the ’70s about the First Lady of Argentina would work so well, with a few changes, for a president of the United States almost 60 years after her death? But they do.
While Trump might not want us to cry for him, I am crying for the United States every day he is still in office.
