A few months ago, Disney released a live-action version of Snow White, and it was a horror. The Death of Snow White is a Horror movie, but it is the most enjoyable adaptation of a fairytale I have seen since Ever After.
The movie starts off with Snow White’s (Sanae Loutsis) mother being forced to give birth to her because she was poisoned, and the baby will die if she doesn’t deliver her immediately. So, the doctors performed a C-section on her, and at that time, the outcome was fatal.
The movie then skips forward to a teenage Snow White hanging out at a faire with her friends, and she is enamored by a Prince (Tristan Nokes), who feels the same way.
In this scene, we get to see how sweet she is, and she is a Princess for the people, unlike her stepmother, the Evil Queen (Chelsea Edmundson). If you thought all of her other portrayals were evil, they ain’t got nothing on this one.
She is sadistic in a way that makes her the evilest one of all. She thrives on torturing people and enjoys soaking in their blood. She does this because she needs their blood to maintain her youth and beauty. And now she is after Snow White’s heart because the mirror deems the Princess to be the fairest one of all.
She sends Huntsmen after the Princess, and they chase her into the dark forest where she escapes. The injured Princess is rescued by the Seven Dwarves, who each have different powers.
Snow White wins them over, and they will do anything to protect her. However, they left her alone in the house, and that is when the Evil Queen transforms into an old lady and gives her the poisoned apple, which puts her into a permanent sleep. Once she is asleep, the Queen kidnaps her and takes her back to the castle.
So when the Prince shows up at the Dwarves’ house to rescue her, and she is not there, they agree to band together to take on the Evil Queen to save her. Instead of whistling while they work, they are ready to fight to the death. And they will.
Will Snow White and the Prince get their happy ending?
This is not a Disney fairytale, so you will have to watch the movie, which is available now to watch on all the popular streaming sites.
I will warn you, I am not faint of heart, but there were a few scenes where I had to cover my eyes because I didn’t want to see what she and her servants were doing. As I said, the Evil Queen is sadistic and likes to torture people. Thus, she does immeasurably cruel things to others and to herself.
While there were a few overly graphic scenes throughout the film, there were also so many beautiful and heartfelt scenes to enjoy.
The film was shot in Woodinville, Washington, which provides a stunning backdrop for the calm moments of the movie. And there are parts of the city that put the dark in the dark forest.
Unlike Rachel Zegler, Loutsis is lovable in the title role. You can see why everyone, except the Evil Queen, adores her. She is kind, caring, and pretty. She is how you picture the live-action version of Snow White to look and act.
Then there is Edmundson, who is gorgeous, but also so freaking good at playing evil. You root for her demise.
This is not the Snow White I grew up with, but it is the Snow White I will grow old with. It is the type of movie you can watch over and over again. It is a fairytale for adults to enjoy.
Massive kudos to Jason Brooks, who wrote, directed, and edited this film.
