Sean Astin is following in his mother’s footsteps and running for president of the Screen Actors’ Guild.
It has been 40 years since Patty Duke assumed the title for three years. Her son told The Hollywood Reporter, “It feels like this moment is a culmination of all of that work,” he said. “The time feels like it’s absolutely right and I’m excited to do it.”
And I am excited he has opted to run. I cannot think of a better person for the job. He was raised by two actors, Duke and John Astin, who spent their lives in the business. Plus, Sean is a caring man, and that is something the actors need after the current administration, which seemed more about camera time than the job.
Along with all of that, Astin has starred in several cult classics, like The Goonies, Rudy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Stranger Things, to name a few. Therefore, he has a deep understanding of the landscape over several decades and can work with studios to secure the best deals for the actors.
If I were a SAG member, he would have my vote. But I am not one. So, I will tell my friends who are to vote for him because I know he will be there for them, and some of them really need his help.
