Joan Rivers passed away today at the age of 81 a week after suffering cardiac and respiratory arrest during a routine surgery.
Her daughter Melissa released this statement about the passing of her mother.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.
Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.
My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.â€
Rivers kicked down doors for female comedians and many of them would not be where they are today without her. She was also the first late night female host, opening the door for people like Chelsea Handler.
But the thing she will be remembered for in the latter part of her life was critiquing people’s clothes on the red carpet at all the major awards shows. Something that made her an enemy to a lot of celebrities, but a hero to her fans.
So today, let’s remember her for the laughter she gave us and keep her spirit alive with joy and not sorrow.
