If someone asked you what Matthew McConaughey’s catchphrase is, you would tell them, “Alright. Alright. Alright.” But do you know how he came up with it?

The Oscar winner told GMA the story of how he wound up improvising the first three words he ever uttered on camera. And he has The Doors’ Jim Morrison to thank for it.

The actor is a big fan of the band, and he watched one of their old concerts. He heard Morrison tell the crowd, “Alright. Alright. Alright. Alright.” and that stuck with McConaughey.

So when he was driving to film his first scene in Dazed & Confused, he was imagining who his character was. He knew that Wooderson was about Rock’n’Roll, his car, and getting high. He was also about the three ladies in his life, so he said alright to all three of them.

And there you have it.

So the next time you hear someone do a McConaughey, you can tell them the origin story. And then your friends will think you are so smart.
