Tonight at 9:30p John Stamos is joining
The New Normal as a love interest for one of the characters on the NBC sitcom and the name of the episode is Gaydar. So do you think you know who it is? Yes as the picture suggests, his character will be getting it on with Jane (Ellen Barkin).
Last week I was on a conference call with him and he told us how he came up with the big kiss he is going to give her in tonight’s episode. It was simply written as a kiss between the two of them, but Stamos wanted something more. So he described to us what happened, “So I thought I’m going to stick my tongue down Ellen’s throat because I want to see some sort of natural weird, surprise or fear or whatever she was going to show because it would have worked for the character.” So did she go all crazy with his kiss? He added, “And the woman didn’t flinch. It wasn’t like there was nothing happening. I did it, it was just like okay. Looks like a normal kiss. Cut. And then we go to lunch. I was hoping for something with Ellen. I mean I think like what’s the farthest thing you can touch in the back of a throat; the uvula or whatever it was. I know I hit it and she didn’t even move.” I think we can all agree that Barkin has some great restraint as an actress because if we were kissed like that by him we would go weak in the knees and let him do whatever he wants. Even though she didn’t react, he had this to say about their connection, “But man what an actress, we lock in, we look at each other’s eyes and then we just go and it’s seriously been the fastest chemistry I’ve had with someone in a long time on television.”
So what attracted him to this role, besides his old friend TNN show creator Ryan Murphy calling him to do it? He said, “I’ve never played a guy who you couldn’t tell (if he was gay), you know where he was at because again nowadays I mean it’s so unfair. I think that’s the point of the episode, which is Gaydar, that doesn’t work anymore. I’ve been, not that there’s anything wrong with it, sometimes I go oh, great they think I’m gay. That’s cool.” He then added, “The rules don’t apply anymore. And I think that’s what we were trying to get at. So I had to come on and play this guy that you didn’t know what he was. And I’ve never done that. It was a very difficult line to walk because as it turns out he’s not gay.” And it was important for Stamos to play him right and not play him as stereotypical questionable man.
So we will have to tune in to The New Normal tonight and for the next few Tuesdays at 9:30p to see John Stamos play a role he is really enjoying.
And here are some little things to enjoy knowing about John Stamos that he also shared with us on the call:
Before Ryan Murphy had Nip/Tuck and after John Stamos was on Full House, the two were looking to do a show together.
Stamos always has time to make a joke about one of his co-stars from Full House, he said “Nene, we share a trailer and she’s just, I’ve seen naturally funny people in the past unlike Bob Saget, but this girl is funny.”
His secret to never ageing, he revealed “I live in a box like a – with no – with oxygen, you know, like Michael – when he passed away and they had that auction of all his stuff” He was just joking. But he did get serious with the answer by saying, “So I think good genes and truthfully I do take care of myself in a sense. You know what I do probably the most that, I mean if there’s any secret, I sleep a lot. I get a lot of sleep and, you know, rejuvenation. So I try to go to bed early.”
He does do some exercise, “I’ve been doing pilates lately, which I think is just a big ploy to get me in those straps, you know, with my legs up because I’m the only guy in the class. And I’ve got my legs in place. This is my – I felt like I’m giving birth or they’re going to do a pap smear or something.” If anyone knows where he takes classes, let me know! I want to see him in the birthing position.
Finally the man who has been touring with the Beach Boys talked about his musical voice, “I’m such a sh!tty singer. I mean later in life I guess I got a little better but not much.” He has done a few Broadway musicals like Cabaret, so I guess he isn’t that sh!tty of a singer after all.
And another thing he is very good at is acting, so watch him tonight and for the next few Tuesdays on NBC’s The New Normal at 9:30p.
