David Hasselhoff does Vegas with The Producers
November 2nd, 2006 under David Hasselhoff/Baywatch, Stage. [ Comments: none ]

David Hasselhoff and Mel Brooks at the casting announcement. photo by Aubrey Reuben David Hasselhoff will go from hunk to high camp in January 2007 when he plays flamboyant musical comedy director Roger DeBris in the Las Vegas premiere of Mel Brooks’ The Producers. The unlikely casting — the star of TV’s "Baywatch" and "Knight Rider" will don William Ivey Long’s delicious drag costumes, including a spangled gown that makes Roger look like the Chrysler Building — was announced Nov. 2 by composer-lyricist and co-librettist Mel Brooks and Paris Las Vegas, the resort where the musical will begin performances Jan. 31, 2007. Brad Oscar will play Max Bialystock in Vegas, as he did to acclaim on Broadway, on tour and in London’s West End. Additional casting for the open-ended Las Vegas run will be announced shortly. The musical opened in 2001 to raves, and was the recipient of the most Tony Awards in Broadway History (12, including Best Musical). Based on Mel Brooks’ Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, the show tells the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a mousy accountant. Together, with the help of their flamboyant director, Roger DeBris (Hasselhoff), they hatch the ultimate scam: raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway flop and pocket the difference. Their theatrical fiasco is the musical Springtime for Hitler. "I’m overjoyed that David Hasselhoff is going to play Roger DeBris in the Las Vegas production of The Producers," Mel Brooks said in a statement. "He has an incredible comedic timing, terrific musical theatre experience and a stage presence that I think will be a perfect marriage with the role. And by the way, he has great legs for that dress."

Here’s a look at Joan Collins and Linda Evans performing on stage in Legends!. The infamous comedy by James Kirkwood that spawned the infamous backstage tome "Diary of a Mad Playwright," began its international tour Sept. 12 at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre. Former "Dynasty" foes Joan Collins and Linda Evans star. Collins and Evans are joined onstage by Joe Farrell as Martin Klemmer, Tonye Patano as Aretha, Will Holman as Boom-Boom and Ethan Matthews as the Cop. Matthews also understudies the role of Martin Klemmer; Chaundra Cameron is the understudy for the part of Aretha.

A sequel to Hair?
October 28th, 2006 under Stage. [ Comments: none ]

BACK IN 1967, "Hair" changed the face of the musical and became a pop-cul ture phenomenon. This show and The Beatles’ "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, released the same year, had a tidal wave effect on America’s youth, on music, fashion, sexuality, recreational drug use and philosophy. It ran at the Biltmore for 1,873 performances. Now I hear that James Rado, one of the original co-authors of this show (along with Gerome Ragni and Galt MacDermot) has fashioned a "Hair" sequel, with the help of his brother, Ted Rado. It is called, for now, "Billy Earth," and is said to take up where "Hair" ended – with the death of the main character Berger in Vietnam. This new 38-song proposal is already in the hands of a Broadway producer. Well, we’re still in the Age of Aquarius, if you believe in the zodiac, so maybe "Billy Earth" will do for Generation Y or Z (whatever comes next) what it did for all those kids who became "dangerous, revolutionary hippies." They are the ones who grew up to be – their parents.

Marc Cherry wants to go from TV to Broadway
October 16th, 2006 under Desperate Housewives, Stage. [ Comments: none ]

When the hit ABC series "Desperate Housewives" ends what looks to be a very lengthy run, its creator-writer Marc Cherry hopes to pen the book for a Broadway musical. Cherry, who expects "Housewives" to play at least through the 2010-2011 television season, tells Newsday, "I’ll take whatever money I’ve made [and] I’m going straight to theatre and writing books for musicals. . . . . I feel like I really just started out learning how to write. I really know a lot about dramatic structure and how to paint characters. . . . Now I would love the time to really dig deep and do something great." Cherry says his favorite musicals include Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Gypsy and Wicked. In addition to "Desperate Housewives," Marc Cherry was also a writer for "Some of My Best Friends," "The Crew," "The 5 Mrs. Buchanans," "The Golden Palace," "The Golden Girls" and "Homeroom." He began his career as a performer in musical theatre.

I am sure working with the girls of Wisteria Lane has given him a lot of material to work with!

Will Greg Kinnear star in Young Frankenstein the Musical?
October 12th, 2006 under Stage. [ Comments: none ]

CAN Greg Kinnear sing? The question has come up now that we’ve learned Mel Brooks was in L.A. this week talking to Kinnear about playing the lead in the Broadway version of "Young Frankenstein." The Post’s Michael Riedel has reported that, with first-choice Hugh Jackman too busy making movies, Jimmy Fallon and Tom Cavanaugh are under consideration for the role created by Gene Wilder in the 1974 comedy classic. Among the songs in the show is Irving Berlin’s "Puttin’ on the Ritz."
