Edward Scissorhands looks beyond bad
November 10th, 2006 under Stage. [ Comments: none ]

Audiences celebrate the North American Premiere of Edward Scissorhands, the new dance-musical devised, directed, and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre from Nov. 11 through Dec. 10. “Matthew Bourne (Swan Lake) is back with a magical new musical adaptation of the classic Tim Burton motion picture Edward Scissorhands,” states press notes, “Already a hit in London, Edward Scissorhands has toured Asia and the United Kingdom prior to making its North American premiere in San Francisco. A treat for the whole family, this touching and witty gothic fairytale tells the story of a boy created by an eccentric inventor. With only scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange new suburban world where the well-meaning community struggles to see past his appearance to the innocence and gentleness within.” Edward Scissorhands is based on themes from the original motion picture score by Danny Elfman by arrangement with 20th Century Fox, with new music and arrangements by Terry Davies.
When will the trend stop, where they destory Hollywood movies by turning them into Broadway Musicals? Please stop before we have Howard The Duck: The Musical!

How bad was the Bob Dylan Broadway Musical?
November 8th, 2006 under Stage. [ Comments: none ]

A musical set to the songs of Bob Dylan will close less than a month after it opened on Broadway, the show’s public relations firm said in a statement on Wednesday. "The Times They Are A-Changin" — which was critically panned — will have its final performance on November 19, closing after 28 performances, a spokesman for Shaffer-Coyle Public Relations said. The closure of the show, conceived and choreographed by Twyla Tharp, who successfully transformed Billy Joel’s songs into Tony-award winning musical "Movin’ Out," follows failures like last year’s flop "Lennon" about the late Beatle. In his review, New York Times critic Ben Brantley called the Bob Dylan show "the latest heart-rending episode in Broadway’s own reality soap opera, ‘When bad shows happen to great songwriters."’ The iconic Dylan approached Tharp three years ago but the critically acclaimed choreographer failed to woo critics, who said her fable about a struggling circus did not capture the magic of Dylan’s songs. New York columnist Michael Musto called the closing a "mercy killing."

Seriously how did anyone think that was a good idea in the first place?

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Reality Show?
November 6th, 2006 under Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stage. [ Comments: none ]

Will the next reality television casting show focus on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat? That is indeed the plan, Lloyd Webber revealed to Theatre.com. The composer serves as the producer of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium, whose leading lady, Connie Fisher, was cast by the popular BBC TV series How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? “I’d like to do Joseph this way,” Lloyd Webber said to Theatre.com. “I think we could have a lot of fun with it. There’s Joseph himself, a girl narrator, and of course there’s huge fun in finding an Elvis [the pharaoh character], as well as finding the best children’s choir and the brothers. We could even have a situation where we keep sending the brothers to ridiculous places and ask the public to tell us where to send them next week. Then Tim [Rice, Joseph’s original lyricist] and I could write a new song in the course of the week, which they could perform when they get there.” If this idea is taken up, Lloyd Webber intends to revive the version of the show that Steven Pimlott directed at the London Palladium in 1991, which was also seen on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre. “We might want to make a slightly revised take on it,” he added. More recently, the show returned to the West End in Bill Kenwright’s touring production. Lloyd Webber said that plans are afoot for the reality TV series focused on Joseph to air next year.

One of the coolest posters ever!
November 3rd, 2006 under Harry Potter, Stage. [ Comments: 1 ]

That poster is for Daniel "Harry Potter" Radcliffe’s new play. How amazing and creative is that poster? At first I thought the horse’s eyes were his nipples, but once I realized what they were I was blown away.
If you want to find out more about Equus, you can read the article that the poster came with at Daily Mail
