I guess the TV execs took some time away from celebrating 420 to announce some season premiere dates, contract renewals and pick ups!
FX is on fire because today they announced that on June 29th Rescue Me is back for its second to last season while Louis will begin its first. Showtime announced on National Pot Day (for some reason) that Season 6 of Weeds will premiere on August 16th followed by the debut of The Big C.
The Comedy Central bosses are taking a few hits to celebrate the news that both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert both renewed their contracts. Stewart will remain with The Daily Show until at least 2011, while Stephen will stay with The Colbert Report until at least 2012.
HBO must be smoking something because they renewed Curb Your Enthusiasm for another season and they are sharing their stash with NBC because they picked up Parenthood before Chuck. Seriously Chuck is so much better than Parenthood. Dang if only Josh Schwartz teamed up with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer he wouldn’t be waiting to find out if Chuck was renewed for a fourth season.
And one last pick up, TV Land is high on their own scripted programming because today they announced that Retired at 35 will be their second scripted comedy and it will premiere early next year. TV Land described the show as “David (Johnathan McClain), a successful young businessman decides to leave the rat race of New York City behind and move into his parents’ (George Segal and Jessica Walter) Florida retirement home to reconnect with them, re-evaluate his life and live the dream of retirement that so many are working toward. While in Florida, David reunites with his best friend Brandon, (Josh McDermitt) and realizes that his former crush Jessica (Ryan Michelle Bathe) is still as beautiful and elusive as ever. Living close by is David’s sister, Amy (Casey Wilson) who has finally found a boyfriend Paul (Matt Champagne).” Considering TV Land airs some of the greatest sitcoms of all time like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Bewitched, Roseanne and Three’s Company, I think they will know to make future classics with Hot in Cleveland and Retired at 35!
This season the ratings are down and for some shows they are down more than others. The Live Feed posted which shows took the biggest hits and the news is bad for the shows that moved to Friday including Ugly Betty that took a really big hit.
Til Death (-48.4%), Ugly Betty (-46.2%) Smallville (-39.8%), Heroes (-35.3%), Fringe” (-33.4%), Gossip Girl (-30.9%), 90210 (-28.3%), One Tree Hill (-25.3%), CSI (-23.2%), Cold Case (-22.5%), Supernatural (-22.4%) and 30 Rock (-21.4%).
While the news was bad for the above shows, some shows like the hysterical The Big Bang Theory found a lot of new viewers.
Big Bang Theory (+35.7%), Private Practice (+27.0%), Biggest Loser (+21.2%), NCIS” (+14.9%) and House (+13.4%)
I am not surprised by the drops by most of the show that took big hits because the quality of most of those shows have declined sharply. Ugly Betty might’ve gotten a makeover, but the show got a makeunder in its storylines. The cast of Gossip Girl might be in their freshman year of college, but they are living like they are in their 30’s and just lost their feel. One Tree Hill lost two of its original cast members, but it also feels like they lost their way. CSI lost William Petersen and now the show is just lost. The only show that I am shocked that is losing its audience is Supernatural which is having a lot of fun this season.
When it comes to the shows that got more viewers, The Big Bang Theory deserves everyone of them because the show just keeps getting better and better. To be honest I am surprised that House is doing better because I am not feeling it this season.
What shows shocked you?
